Chapter 49 - Choice

"Please?"

F*ck. Buo na talaga ang loob niya.

Huminga ako ng malalim at nilingon ang driver ko. I told him to wait here. Then Iris and I went out of the limousine.

"Dashiell, iho!" pagbati ng nanay ni Iris na agad lumapit sa amin. Halatang kanina pa siya naghihintay sa pintuan. Hinawakan niya ang mga pisngi ko upang tingnan ang mukha ko. "Napaka-guwapo mo talagang bata ka!"

"Ma," nahihiyang sambit ni Iris.

"What? Natutuwa lang ako dahil alam kong kapag nagkaanak na kayong dalawa, maganda ang magiging resulta! Nako bilis bilisan niyo na nga, nae-excite akong magkaapo!"

I wanted to smile but when I looked at Iris, sadness washed through me. Those things are probably not going to happen especially when our relationship is about to end.

Mukhang aayawan na po ako ng anak mo, Mrs. Leona.

"I've seen the photos earlier. You both looked so good, pero bakit nung patapos na, parehas na kayong hindi nakangiti?"

"Pagod lang po," Iris answered her. "Sige Ma, doon na muna po kami sa taas---"

"Actually, can we go somewhere else?" I asked her.

Nagtaka si Iris sa tanong ko ngunit tumango rin naman. "S-sure."

Tita smiled. "Alright, I'll tell the maids to bring you both food. Sige iho, ikumusta mo ako sa Papa mo, okay?"

"Will do, Tita. Salamat po."

Pagalis ni Tita ay napailing si Iris. "Pasensyahan mo na si Mama ha."

"Why? Wala naman siyang sinabing mali." Unless she hated hearing her mom say that she wanted a grandchild already.

It's obvious that Iris got startled at what I said but she just brushed it off.

"Doon tayo sa library?"

I just nod my head lightly and followed her. Pagpasok sa room na iyon ay umupo ako sa sofa habang binuksan niya naman ang mga kurtina. They have a huge library here at their house. Mahilig kasi magbasa ng libro ang Papa niya.

Nang humarap si Iris sa akin ay hindi na siya mapakali. She seemed tense as she sat in front of me.

"You need to know something," she started. "I lied to you."

I know.

Hindi ako umimik at patuloy na tiningnan lang siya.

"I didn't mean to. I was just... scared that you'll take it differently. I mean, after the incident at the party, I know it'd affect you badly. I didn't want to ruin your day since we still have the event going on so... I kept it from you. But I realized what I did was wrong. We promised each other no more secrets..."

Halatang kabadong kabado siya dahil nauutal siya at nagmamadaling magsalita.

I ran a hand through my hair and sighed. "And?"

Iris studied my face but I made sure there isn't a single emotion present that could hint her about my feelings.

"Remember earlier when you were looking for me? I wasn't really at the comfort room that time. I was with your brother."

She took a deep breath. Even though she's hesitant, she continued.

"I went out to the vineyard, to get some fresh air. Wala pang ilang minuto, bigla na lang dumating ang kapatid mo doon."
