The Thinker Who Couldn't Think

Billy was a thinker. Every day he liked to sit on a tree branch at school and think. It was his favourite thinking spot. Other children liked to play all sorts of games among the branches, swinging around like monkeys. Billy liked to sit and think, occasionally partaking in the games.

Even though Billy liked to think, sometimes he couldn't think of answers to common questions, such as what was 3 + 4, or what his favourite colour was. He would just stay there, thinking. He had many friends who were also great thinkers. Together they would sit among the branches, thinking.

"What if we had wings like birds? Wouldn't that be weird?" one of them would say. Another would respond, "Wait, if we had wings, that would be normal. Then wingless people would be weird." and all of them would respond, "Intwesting." and continue thinking.

"What if the entire world was made of ice cream?"

"Then the world would be gone within seconds."

"Why are humans the only beings on this planet that need clothes and money to survive?"

"Mystery."

"Where do babies come from?"

"Secret of life."

This is what the Thinkers thought, every day, high up in the branches. One day, a girl walked over to the tree, and asked, "Is this where the Thinkers Think?" "Everyone is a Thinker, we just do it more often." said Greg, one of the Thinkers. "Indeed." said Larry, another Thinker. The girl said, "Well, I need some help from you Thinkers." "Just ask it and we'll think about it." said a Thinker named Adam.

The girl, whose name was Sophia, climbed up the Thinking tree and asked them if they could help find her missing bracelet. Greg said, "Well, we Thinkers usually think, not solve mysteries." "But solving mysteries requires thinking." Adam pointed out. Larry nodded, and asked, "So why us?" "Because one of you is a witness. Billy Bobbins, right?" everyone looked at Billy. Billy shrugged.

Billy was thinking. He thought for a long time, but he couldn't think of anything that had to do with Sophia's bracelet. He was stumped. "Sorry Sophia, I'm a Thinker who can't Think.". "But surely you know something?" "Where did you last see it?" asked Adam. "Well I had it on during class, then I showed it off to my friends. Then I went to buy lunch and that's when it disappeared.".

The Thinkers thought for a long time. "Maybe you dropped it on the floor?" "Maybe one of your friends borrowed it?" "Maybe it's in your sock drawer. Everything I lose I always find in my sock drawer.". Billy then asked, "Did you take it off?" "No.... wait, yes, during lunch. I took it off to wash my hands." said Sophia. "Where did you put it?" "I'm not sure now." "Did you give it to one of your friends?" "No, they were waiting for me at the table.".

"Did you leave it at the sink?" asked Larry. Sophia was wide eyed. "I hope not! But I don't remember putting anything on the sink." Billy was quiet, eyeing Sophia's skirt, and how the side of it seemed to bulge in a very strange, small shape. "Sophia," he said, "did you by any chance, put your bracelet in your pocket?" Sophia quickly dug into her pockets, and pulled out a sparkly pink and purple bracelet.

Everyone started to laugh. They were laughing so hard they had to get down from the tree. Sophia laughed the hardest, "To think I turned the entire school upside down and it was in my pocket the whole time!". Everyone patted Billy on the shoulders, and Billy smiled.

From then on, not only did the Thinkers continue to Think, but they helped many people, simply by thinking.
