Today was the first day of winter on the Alexandrian Calendar, but I didn't yet know that it was also the day that would mark the beginning of the worst year of my life.

The cold had just truly set in for the first time, and through the arched stone windows in the great hallway I could see the first few flakes of snow beginning to fall from the sky.

Snow on the first day of winter was a rarity. I hadn't even gotten out my wool dress yet. I was still wearing cotton.

For just a moment I stopped to stare out at the small piles beginning to gather on the ground before I continued on my way.

I walked down the hallway, past the cold stares of various minor saints. As silly as it was, I kept my eyes forward, trying to avoid their gaze. They were only statues, but I couldn't help but feel that they were keeping an eye on me.

I made my way down to the greater prayer hall, pushing open the heavy wood doors. It was empty, as it usually was this late in the day. There was a sweet, musky scent in the air. Someone must have just been burning incense. I must have just missed them.

How lucky.

In the center of the room, there was the largest statue in the entire house. It was a white marble depiction of Saint Meredith kneeled before the goddess Marié, becoming a blessed one. On Saint Meredith's forehead was the mark of the goddess, a golden sunburst. Between them the eternal flame flickered away in its hearth. It was a blessed fire that always stayed lit, tended to daily by the Daughters.

I pulled some incense from the pouch at my hip, and lit it in the fire. Once it began to release its sweet smoke, I placed it near the foot of the goddess and kneeled to pray.

"Mother Goddess, please have mercy on me.

You know that I have always been your loyal servant, and I have never questioned your will, and never once have I considered forsaking my holy vows to you. I have always done my best to keep to your will and your ways.

So please— this I beg of you. Let my end be swift. Please, all I ask of you is that you not let me suffer.

This I do for you."

After I finished I got up and left, heading back to my room
