(45) Luke

Luke is an Ex-Great Western Railway 1500 class 0-6-0PT, one of the last 2 pannier tanks designed for the Great Western Railway by F .W. Hawksworth.  Locomotive 1509 would be constructed at Swindon Works between 1949 and 1955, being the last member of the class to be built. Upon completion, 1509 would join 3 of his other brothers in working around the wales area, mainly sticking around Newport. For at least 7 years of his life, 1509 would live a relatively simple life style, however, in 1959 a letter was sent to Newport which sent for 1509 to be withdrawn. Instead of lying down and admitting defeat, the young engine sought to leave the other railway, and sneak onto the Skarloey branch, hiding away inside mine shafts and tunnels before being eventually caught. Instead of facing punishments for sneaking away to Sodor, Sir Topham hatt saw to it that 'Luke' would be given a name, and the 45th number slot. Since arriving on the North Western Railway, luke has been painted in British Railways lined black livery, and his current green with white stripes.
