celebrity voice actor (derogatory) vs og voice actor (affectionate)

yknow. i dont give a shit about sonic (like the blue bitch) but i keep seeing things on twitter for it — i follow a lot of art accounts who are going through sonic phases rn so they keep liking / retweeting a whole bunch of sonic shit lol — but i WILL say that the people making the movies are doing absolutely wonderfully when it comes to adapting the games into movies

things the creators of the sonic movies have done well, according to all the info i see on twitter;

- not taking the exact plot of the games and trying to translate it into a movie (bc that never works) but instead making a new story with the characters with aspects of the games in it

- getting someone who actually knows / likes the franchise to direct

- keeping! the! voice! actors! from! the! games! (or at least one of them lmao)

- actually listening to fans / people when they do smth wrong (like the fucking horrible og design do you remember that monstrosity?)

- apparently putting found family into it

and i mean. the voice actor thing is what gets me bc, rant warning, voice actors are like. probably one of the most mistreated / unknown type of creators / artists in the industry and it is SO COMMON for their characters (some of who have been voicing the characters since their creation) to get recasted in favour of a celebrity voice actor to draw in audiences and make it more marketable. yes this is about the mario movie, yes i am still absolutely furious over it. the og voice for mario, Charles Martient, has PLAYED MARIO SINCE 1992 AND YOU REPLACE HIM WITH CRISP 'STAR LORD' RAT?? GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!!!!

not to mention all the other shitty video adapted movies. Uncharted which marketed itself as a "sequel to the games" but got the characterization wrong, bastardized the established character backstories and made like. no sense logistically (even if it had some cool ascents to it). and again, went for miscasted star power over the actual voice actor / motion capturer WHO HAD DONE LIVE ACTION STUFF BEFORE AND TOTALLY COULD HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB IF THEY HADNT GONE FOR THR "SEQUEL TO THE GAMES" ASPECTS WHICH THEY JUST THREW OUT THE WINDOW ANYWAYS!!!

in addition to that resident evil movies always suck bc they follow the games too closely, those games don't work well adapted bc theyre the type of story that doesnt work well in any other media! not to say theyre bad, but if you sit down and examine the actual story of the games it falls apart pretty quickly, its pretty basic and gets way to convoluted in some parts that it barely even works in the games, but the reason theyre popular is not bc of the story!! its the gameplay!! its the horror aspects which dont translate well into a movie!! thats why it fucking sucks dude!! just take the characters make a new universe and stop trying to make shot-for-shot remakes of the games its never gonna work.

its also why im ... tentative about the fnaf movie rn. sure its been postponed again and this point will come out when im wrinkled and grey, but one hand — fnaf gameplay is not much. in the og games, which is where the story would most likely be based on, you just stare at different pngs for hours and listen to ambience noise. sure, sister location has some aspects of free roam but its basically just you moving from room to room. but that is also where most of the horror comes from! youre hopeless and cant move and have no way of fighting back. also the ambience is fucking terrifying that def adds to it.

on the other hand tho, fnaf has. alot of story and untapped potential when it comes to lore and stuff. its convoluted and makes no sense but theres the bones for smth there, and it could def make a good story if you cleaned it up and shaved it off and focused on a certain character / plot line — like the Afton family or the missing children or smth. however, on a third hand, i am not that confident in Scotts storytelling abilities. the novels are a fucking trainwreck and i feel like someone else definitely needs to pen the script with just. like. input from him for the lore aspects of smth

i got majorly off topic here so sorry. anyways. idk. i just have a lot of thoughts on video games and the way theyre treated by main stream media (adaption / award whys, which is an entirely separate issue i want to talk about one day in adjacent to the animation industry as a whole) and it's just. nice to see one good movie-video game adaption in our life time but i am surprised its the movie that was initially so close to being cancelled bc someone greenlit this

— design for the main character

but the point of all this tho is to give voice actors the credit they deserve or die by my teeth. Dee Bradley Baker, Tara Strong, Colleen O'Shaughnessey and Kellen Goff could outperform crisp rat any day and you MAY quote me that
