He dragged his feet forcing his drained body to his dorm room. He took out the keys from his pocket and unlocked the door. The door had just opened an inch or two when suddenly Kent heard his room partner already inside.
He heard him talking to someone on the phone. Kent strained his ears as he tried to listen to the conversation.
"But... I was just trying to blend in Dad!" Kent's eyes narrowed a little from hearing who the person was on the other side of the line. Sean was talking to his father. Kent stilled his movements to not let Sean know about his presence. He wanted to listen to his conversation with his father.
" But this is what high school kids do. I saw it in the movies." Kent was confused what Sean was talking about. But it sure sounded lame.
" Okay, I'll try to limit my extra curricular activities. Yeah, sure you won't hear complains from Mr. Haggard again."
Kent bit his lip. Sean was probably getting a scolding from his dad. Something he was dreading to have in his near future. He felt so doomed tonight.
But before he could empathize with Sean, he heard him burst out laughing.
"Right! I knew you'd catch that. Yep, I had to do it to pass those friggin tests. I never stood a chance otherwise. And I couldn't afford to flunk in them." Sean laughed again as he said those words.
Kent just stood there at the doorstep gaping at Sean. He was smiling while talking to his dad? Kent knew what they were talking about.
Sean's score had literally given him a cardiac arrest. He had scored a 90.89% average. Kent knew it at once that Sean had cheated. But he couldn't understand how he managed that. The faculties were so strict inspecting in the examination hall. No kid could pull something like that easily. But Sean's scores were saying quite the opposite of it.
Everyone knew the reality. Sean wasn't the brightest of his section. And to get a score like that? Everyone knew Sean cheated. But obviously he wasn't confronted at all. In fact, as Kent expected, Sean was looked at like a hero. Kids around praised him for doing something that impossible. And to add a cherry on the cake, Sean didn't try to hide it. He boasted himself with pride.
What caught Kent's curiosity was how Sean never shared the secret of how he managed it.
By hearing their conversation, Kent could gather that his dad already knew about him and they were joking about it.
"Yeah, I got it. It went a little too far. Don't worry, I'll be careful next time.", Sean smiled as he turned around. Kent noticed a little abrupt reaction on Sean's face when he saw his room partner.
Kent now just stepped inside the room as he placed his bag in the shelf.
" Oh, err... Dad, I got to go. Yeah, we'll talk later." Sean hung up the phone grinning at Kent.
"Hey buddy, how long have you been here?" Kent removed his practice shirt as he went to the washroom for the shower.
"Just long enough to hear your conversation." he told turning to look at Sean.
He saw Sean grinning an inch more, obviously amused by his response." You seem to have a nice relationship with your Dad." It wasn't a question. Kent stated the fact.
Sean nodded as he went to his side of the room looking on the floor where usually his wardrobe rested.
"Yep, he's the best.", Sean picked up a jacket turning to look back at Kent.
