Chapter 7 – Double Trouble

“ Alright boys! That’s it for today. Nice Game. Now hit the showers. You all stink like dead rats!”, The coach shouted and whistled the team after a tedious workout and the practice match.
It was the Saturday afternoon  and the team had gathered in the field 3 hours ago to work on their new strategy for the final round game coming after Christmas. It was a big deal and Coach had been killing the boys to steam up.

Kent talked out the new3-5-2  formation they would follow for this opposing team. That required a slight change in their positions. Kent, though being a forward replaced his position with a mid fielder. They worked on a few drills ranging from one to one to passing and shooting. And Kent would be regulate the moves from his new position.

The team slowly dispersed to the team’s locker room. But Kent still remained in the field. Coach had stopped him to talk about something important. Kent wondered what it would be. Once the ground seemed empty, Kent kept playing with his football, still practicing his own signature moves. Coach whistled and called him to his office.
“ Sir, can I come in?”, Kent asked as he approached the office.

Coach nodded and asked him to close the door behind him. Kent could notice that their coach was not in a very good mood.
“ What is it Sir?”, Kent asked as he noticed him pacing in his office restlessly.

“ There are a few murmurs in the team, Stevens. You must already know that Harry Calvin is trying to take your position as the new Captain of the team. Some of the team members support him. But most of them are on your side. And the new strategy you came up with today, I am hoping you’ll bag some more votes for yourself.”

Coach kept on talking but Kent was not really surprised by all this. He knew there were some discrepancies within his team. He knew Harry was leading it. He had wanted to be the Captain for quite some time now. But Kent never let him be.

Kent knew he was not very comradie with his team, nor he shared their team spirit. He couldn’t care less for being a Captain. But it was important cause his dad wanted that. Kent couldn’t forget the day, when he finally saw a hint of approval in his dad’s eyes when he told about him being the new Captain.
Therefore, no matter, if he liked it or not, it couldn’t let Harry take his place.
“ I already know that Sir.”, Kent replied.

Coach walked upto him ,looking straight in his eyes.” You win this championship kid. And there would be no need of votes. I am not taking any sides but you better win that game Stevens. You hear me?”

Kent nodded firmly. Yes, he can definitely do that.
“ Alright, off you go now. Take your shower.” Kent nodded again and left his office.

Kent reached the locker room but to his surprise his team was already gone. No one was there. Huh? Did they already take showers? He just shrugged and took off his shirt.
He reached his locker for a fresh shirt when he found an envelope in there.

He opened it already knowing what it was about. It was their test results. Other students had it displayed on the notice board. But Kent always received an envelope like this cause it not only included his result but also a certificate and a congrats letter from the principal. The school always encouraged their rankers. The envelope was one of the ways.

Once he opened it he sighed in disappointed. He had gotten an average score of 95.56%. That was one of his lowest scores he ever got.

The letter showed him being the top scorer of his class but he knew his dad wouldn’t take that as an excuse. None of the students in his section ever got a 90 above score. Only a few score in 80’s.  The names were quites expected. But Kent was never expected to score so low.
