People must have suspected that the world would end when the resources started to run out. When the ices melted and water covered the majority of landmass. Or maybe denial followed until the bitter end of most humans, animals and living organism. The amount of people had highly outweighed the amount of space, resources and energy that the Earth was able to produce. But humans had refused to make compromises. People who were used to luxury and lavished lifestyles wouldn't give it up for the sake of others well-being and many had blamed the media for exaggerating the situation. Although, society came up with clever inventions such as cities floating on water, hydrogen-driven vehicles and genetically modified crops that was able to survive in the newfound climate, it didn't help them in the end.

The biggest issue had been the world's increased need for energy to sustain itself. Scientists worked day and night to try and find a way to make nuclear plants that used fusion instead of fission to produce the energy. But when nothing succeeded, the world decided to resort back to normal nuclear plants, unknowing that it would be their doom. The nuclear power did the trick in the beginning, it managed to produce required amount of energy and the new power plants was way more secure than earlier models. But with the changing climate, it didn't matter in the end.

Eight nuclear plants was built, all named after one of the planets in the solar system. One of the main power plants, called Saturn, would come to be humanities doom. Nature had finally had enough of humans playing Gods. An earthquake, bigger than the world had have ever seen before, struck the landmass where Saturn was located, causing the core to completely collapse. The consequences were devastating, wiping out most of the world's population. A "lucky" few had secretively built a lead-based bunker. The bunker had been a complete secret from most of the world but about a hundred people knew of its existence. These people were of high rank in society and was chosen based on skills that might come in handy. The lead-facility was equipped with necessities that would make it possible to form a mini-scaled society. How these people could have had the conscious to save themselves and scarifies the rest of humanity might forever remain a mystery. But maybe when people are put between the choice of dying together or saving themselves, people's selfish survival instincts become truly transparent. If any other humans survived that day remain unclear. But as time passed by, rumors started to circulate about the so-called "the others", people that miraculously might have survived, but the rumors were for a long time never confirmed.
