Chapter 5: Vampires come out at night

Giselle rolled her eyes. "Don't flatter yourself, you got lucky."

"Don't worry about it." He said. "It was only your first time."

"And your 100th?" She asked.

"Possibly." He replied.

Before Giselle could respond Isaac stiffened. His whole facial expression changed from calm to intense. Giselle watched him as he stared ahead into the misty distance across the campus.

A dark figure seemed to be approaching them. Isaac stepped in front of her as if to protect her. Giselle tried to get a better look but Isaac's arm was right in front of her like a brick wall, not allowing her to move forward.

"Stay back." He muttered.

“Why, what is -"

"Stay back!" He repeated in a more threatening tone.

Giselle didn't have the strength to fight with Isaac. She was powerless and exhausted. She stood a half step back from Isaac and watched carefully.

The dark figure was now in sight. To Giselle's surprise it was a boy. He was tall and incredibly handsome. His features seemed to be carved into his face and stood out better than anyone else's. His cheekbones high and his eyes pierced at the both of them as he made his way up to Isaac, and then Giselle saw it; she saw his deep red eyes. Her face flushed and the air was sucked out of her.

Vampire. She thought.

"Aw, Isaac thinks I’m going to hurt the poor girl." The vampire said.

"I can never be so sure." Isaac said.

"That's against school rules frosty." The vampire said. "Even though it’s passed human curfew, and you shouldn't be out this time of night."

"And what are you going to do about it, Vincent?" Isaac said eyes locked with the Vampire.

Vincent shrugged and then smiled revealing his fangs. "I think I just decided."

Vincent crouched forward ready to attack Isaac. Giselle felt Isaac go cold and watched his finger go a bright blue just like when they were about to battle.

"That's enough!" A voice said. Isaac's arms were back at his side as he turned to realized Ms. Ambrosia approaching.

"Isaac, what are you doing out this time of night?" Ms. Ambrosia asked.

"Food court." He muttered. "A sick student from the nurse’s office got hungry; she's been sleeping all day and has just awoke.”

Ms. Ambrosia glanced at Giselle. "Very well, go on."

Isaac glanced at Vincent who was smiling.

"We'll continue this another time, Snow man." Vincent said.

"As for you Vincent, in my office this instant." Ms. Ambrosia continued.

Vincent followed her with a smirk as Isaac continued his path towards the food court. Giselle followed almost relieved that a fight didn't occur.

The panic that was once rising in Giselle was soon gone when they arrived at the food court. Giselle settled for simple pasta in tomato sauce and sat across from Isaac at a table.

"So, the vampires from across the campus come out at night?" She asked.

"Yes." He replied. "Since they can't come out in the day, them and the werewolves’ use the classroom facility's with hired teachers for the night while the students are asleep."

“Interesting" Giselle muttered. "That's the first vampire I've seen, but I heard they were here also."

Isaac nodded. "You'll see them at different night activities but never during the day time."

"Why?" She asked.

"Well, as you know I'm sure, Vampires can’t come out in the sunlight so they stay in their sleeping wing across campus until the night and the werewolf's prefer night classes because that is when they transform."

Giselle nodded. “Right”

Isaac glanced at his watch. "Hurry, it's going to be midnight soon and that's when things get really crazy around campus."

“In which way?”

"Well, that’s when the classes for the werewolves and vampires start and I'm sure you don't want us to get caught up with a pack of them."

"Hmm, so all the Vampires must hate you." Giselle said.

"No, they just are all pretty hostile towards humans." Isaac said. “Most of them anyway."

"I'd be upset too." Giselle said. "If I couldn't go out in the sunlight, I guess that means no beach time for them."

Isaac smirked. "I'm sure they have better things to worry about besides soaking in the sun."

Giselle shrugged. "You're so -" She hesitated. "Serious."

Isaac nodded. "I try to show little emotion."

“How boring" She muttered.

"No, How professional." He said. "I barely know you first year; just know that I'm unreadable."

"I wasn't trying to read you anyway." She said.

"Good." Isaac said. “Because never will I be an open book"

And with that a thick silence passed as Giselle finished the remaining of her pasta thinking about open books and Vampires. Her mind swirled around the idea of getting her blood drank because of being outside this late. Quickly she finished her food and followed Isaac back to the nurse’s office. Fear was never in Giselle's vocabulary but death definitely was, and she liked living.
