30th November 1942, Roy Chaudhary Kothi- 10 PM

Mallika's heart slammed in her chest as his deep voice resonated in her ears.

Clutching the phone receiver tightly, she tried to control her racing heartbeats as she whispered in the phone,

"Who am I talking to? BRC, or Batuk?"

A smile appeared on his lips as he softly answered,

"Jis se tum baat kerna chaho, Mallika."

An answering smile adorned her lips as she confided,

"I think I liked Batuk better..."

He lightly chuckled in the phone on her reply and said,

"I will try to be the version of myself that you like, Mallika. Aur yehi meri doosri wajeh hai to fight for us!"

Doosri wajeh?

Confused, she asked quizzically,

"Doosri wajeh? What do you mean? Pehli wajeh kia hai?"

Taking a deep breath, he contemplated his words as he replied to her carefully,

"Mallika, tumne kaha tha na ke mujhe pehle evaluate kerna hoga ke humare relationship mien kia damage hua tha, aur mien usay kyun fix kerna chahta hun?"

"Haan..." she replied, slowly, wondering what his reply would be.

However, his reply was not the answer that she was expecting. Instead, it was a question,

"Mallika, do you remember our first fight?"

Their first fight also was because Batuk had kissed another girl when he had been snogging with Mallika too. It had also been the longest fight, resulting in them not speaking to each other for close to two months.

Feeling the bitterness of that fight, she said tightly,

"Haan...Batuk. Mujhe sab yad hai." And then, wondering aloud, she said, "I am surprised ke tumhien kaise yaad hai woh sab?"

The flashbacks of their fight and the reason of it were enough to make him a little contrite. However, the way they had made-up brought a smile on his face as he replied to her,

"Mujhe bhi sab yaad hai, Mallika. I may look stupid and dumb to you...mien shayad itna intelligent hun bhi nahi, lekin meri memory buht sharp hai. Mujhe humari first meeting bhi yaad hai jab hum college ke freshman mixer mien milay thay. I still remember your short black dress that stole my heart right away!"

Pausing, he closed his eyes with a soft smile lingering on his lips. His voice turned dreamy as he recalled their earlier days of togetherness.

"You and I hit off immediately na... I remember humari pehli baat hi India se related hui thy. You were the only Indian girl there, and both of us were missing home a little too much that night. Tumse mil ker I felt a sense of belonging... Meri homesickness kuch kam hui thy."

Reminiscing how their mutual attraction had brought them closer, he smiled and said,

"I remember our first kiss too. Tumhien yaad hai miene kaise aik damm se aa ker tumko kiss kia tha? I had caught you by surprise, haina?"

Hearing him now talking so fondly of their time together, after every rough patch they had seen in their relationship, a dull ache settled on her heart as tears formed in her eyes. Recalling their first kiss, she whispered,
