SORRY FOR ANY MISTAKES

ELLIOT

Being a teacher, you did not know how the day would go. All I could do was hope that the day went smoothly. I drank my coffee at my desk before calling the attendant.

"Alex?" I called out.

"He isn't here Mr. E," Tiffany said.

I placed a mark by his name and moved down my sheet.

"Sid?"

"He's not here either Mr.E.," Tiffany said.

a mark by his name, too.

"Mitch?"

"Here, Mr. E."

A mark by his name.

"Calvin?"

There was a small "Here." that came from Calvin.

"Kevin?"

"Here Mr. E."

A mark by his name.

"Tiffany?"

"Here, Sir."

A mark by her name.

I go to the next name. "Kevin?"

"Here, Mr. Choi."

"Jessica?"

"Here."

A mark by her name.

"Dominic?"

"Here."

A mark.

"Jennie?"

No answer.

I looked up from my attendance sheet and stared at her. "Jennie?"

Again, no answer.

"Jennie, you need to answer. I'm calling the attendance."

"I don't want to be called Jennie." She said,

"Well, I'm doing attendance, so I have to call your name."

"I changed my name."

There wasn't enough coffee in me this morning to be dealing with this. I smiled and said, "Just say here, okay?"

"No."

"Jennie."

"My name isn't Jennie."

"Here your name says your Jennie. I've known you to be Jennie. So why all of a sudden isn't your name Jennie?"

"Because my name is Aiden."

"That's a boy's name, though," Tiffany said. "Aren't you a girl?"

"No." Jennie turned to look at Tiffany. "I'm a boy."

"How are you, a boy? You use the girl's restroom. And even dress like a girl." Tiffany said.

"On the outside, I'm a girl. But on the inside, I'm a boy." Jennie turned forward to look at me. "Please, Mr. Elliot, call me Aiden"

Was she... no, were they trans? I couldn't ask them that In front of everyone. I put a mark by their name and stood, calling them to follow me outside the classroom. They stood in front of me and I kneel to their level.
