This story doesn't take place in America which is why the kids are 11 years old in the 8th grade. The Caribbean school system is different just like any other school system around the world.
There is no middle school. but Preschool, Primary, and High school. They graduate pre-school at 3 years old, go to primary from 3/4 years -11/12. it's 10 years then they graduate. (What I was told by the old co-writer who lives in the Caribbean from the island she lives on)
There are three high-school educational systems, Dutch /Caribbean/American (What I was told by the old co-writer who lives in the Caribbean)
