Chapter 30.

"John B, what are we doing at the police station?" I asked my brother as we pulled up outside the station.

"Somebody's gotta tell them what happened" John B said as Pope coughed next to us, still smoking JJ's weed.

"Idiot" I mumbled to Pope

"All right. I'm just going to be real with you right now" JJ said leaning on me and putting his hand on John B's shoulder. "You might end up in the lion's den, but you don't go there on purpose. It's fundamental. Just like my old man always told me, you should never ever trust cops. No matter what the circumstance is" JJ said

"Your old man's an abusive liar" I said to JJ, I was annoyed at him already so I couldn't stop it from coming out

"I agree with JJ" Pope said beside me

"Of course you do" I rolled my eyes

"Fuck the police" Pope yelled

"Are you going to the dark side now?" Kie asked from the front seat

"When's the last time the police helped us?" Pope yelled

"Peterkin looked out for me, all right? Tried to at least. They need to know" John B said getting out of the car

"I'll come with you" I said, following him into the station, ignoring JJ's protests.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked my brother before opening the door to the police station.

There was one lady working behind the desk talking on her radio as John B walked up to her and I stayed beside him.

"Excuse me ma'am" He said softly

"This is not a good time, kid" She snapped back

"We know who shot the sheriff" I said to her which got her attention

"You stay put, I'll get a deputy" She said before running off

"Central, three Vick. We have a suspect in our 31. John Routledge" We heard come over the radio making John B and I look at each other with wide eyes

"Copy that. All units be on the lookout for John B Routledge. Sixteen year old, white male, six foot. Last seen wearing board shorts, a 'Bad Brains' t shirt and a faded red hoodie" The radio said again

"John B we need to get out of here right now" I said before the doors opened behind me revealing two deputy's.

"Just breathe all right" One deputy said

"Let me see your hands" The other said

"I didn't do it okay" John B said before grabbing my hand and running out the door towards Kie's car.

"Kie start the car" John B and I yelled as we were running

"What did you do?" Kie was yelling

"Kie just go, drive" I yelled at her as the deputy held onto John B's half open door

"John B, open it" I yelled to him, he opened the door fully making the deputy fall to the ground.

"You two are going to need to tell us what the fuck just happened?" JJ yelled

"John B is wanted" was all I could say.

We all sat in silence as Kie sped away, John B and I looking at each other, not knowing what to do next.

We slept in Kie's car not knowing where else to go. We woke up to the radio "Good news for the residents of Outer Banks. Dominion Power says their underwater transmission line, which will restore power to 90% of the area should be functional within 24hrs. Still no arrest in the shooting death of Sheriff Susan Peterkin.
