Y/n's POV (I do that sometimes 😍) :
I didn't know them well. Of course I didn't, we barely met. But I wanted to know them. Be able to say with confidence their favorite color. They were really nice, and comfortable to be around. Like they expected nothing from me. What were they passionate about? And how did I want to figure that out?
The Madrigals have always been a great crowd. Me, Camilo, and Mirabel were all the same age, so despite not talking to each other, I at least could recognize them. Dolores was also great, but I still have the question of why she sent Camilo and me to embarrass them. To distract them? I don't know, but I appreciated it.
So dinner with them tonight. What do I wear? My mom probably has some sort of say in this, right? "Mama! What should I wear to the Madrigals tonight?" She ran up to my room, a bit too excited.
"Well depends, are you there for Mirabel/Camilo?" (whichever one would fill her cis-het narrative) Oh course she assumes that. She stares, waiting for my response, getting more excited.
"Camilo, it's not like that. We barely know each other. So do I dress up or not?" I sigh, now waiting her response, but she's already picking out a nice outfit. A perfect mix of dressing up, but not to overshine Isabela, because it seems to be her day.
I walk over to the house, messing with my hair in the reflection of the door knob before knocking. I can be me. I can be Y/n. It takes a second of the house rumbling for Señora Julieta to open the door. I can barely see the relief in her smile, "Hola querido/a, come in." She starts to whisper, "It's a bit tense, my daughter's proposal is meant to be tonight." I nod, and she walks with me to the table, announcing my arrival.
I sit between Dolores and Camilo. Mirabel seems slightly relieved by this, despite not stopping eye contact with Dolores. Camilo half introduces everyone to me. I now have a slight opinion on everyone based on their responses.
Isabela's nice, Luisa's really nice but particularly upset about something, Señor Félix is fun and energetic, Señora Pepa is really excited her kid has friends, Antonio is sweet, Abuela Alma is calm, and Señor Augustin is the most stressed one that was willing to respond. Dolores and Mirabel said nothing.
And the real stars of the dinner show, as an elderly lady and a younger man around Isabela's age sit down The Guzmán's. Everybody in the room changes how they act in some small way. I think even I sat a little bit taller.
After what felt like an eternity of me and Camilo just glancing at each other, both afraid to speak, Dolores whispers to me to tell her sibling something that seems kind of important.
"Hey, Camilo, Dolores listened in on Mirabel and she snuck into your Tío Bruno's tower, and there was a prophecy where Mirabel started the cracks." As I looked from Camilo to Mirabel I knew I did something wrong. Camilo shifted from Mirabel to Bruno, then back to themself with a messed up face, having their papí inform them to fix their face, and then Mirabel stared like I just killed her cat.
A couple seconds later, Camilo was telling Señor Félix everything, and he spit water across the table. He told Señora Pepa who started a cloud, and she told Señora Julieta. This may not be the perfect night we were expecting.
So as one trying to save themself does, Mirabel tries to rush the proposal. Which was just uncomfortable to watch. But the cracks were real, and she had to try and cover them up. I kept glancing to Camilo, but they had no idea what to do either. Then rats (rats? Where did rats come from?) assemble the future telling for all to see and the house becomes a wreck, as Dolores yells it out.
Me and Camilo don't really notice, and I don't know which of us did it, but we hold hands under the table, looking for some sort of quick comfort. It's storming now, so Camilo drags me to another room, quickly telling me as much as he could about the situation.
"So he's gone- but his visions are still going to happen and' ugh I'm sorry, today was not the day to invite you...umm..." They looked at the floor, "You should probably go now, lo siento mi amor."
I wasn't mad at them for it or anything, so I asked, "Could I come tomorrow? Or would that be bad timing?" They were visibly happy that I didn't care.
"It's never bad timing. You could probably stay the night if you really wanted." They giggled.
"Don't offer me that!" I shot back.
"I have to go with my mamí for a bit, but if you're cool with it, and your parents are, go to my room! If it's a mirror maze go to Dolores, she'll know." They quickly realized that they shouldn't sound happy.
My parents knew where I was, they'd probably assume. "Hasta pronta, mi amor."
They smiled, and once again was worried and ran off.
They wanted me here, even when having a rough day. I almost hope the room is a mirror maze though, it may be fun.
