Camilo's POV:

The Madrigals.

I love my family. The great, amazing Madrigals. Sometimes it's a bit more stressful than imagined, but you learn to live with it. I don't even have it the worst, Mirabel didn't even get a gift, and my tío Bruno just disappeared one day. But now, due to Mirabel, we're all scared about my brother Antonio not getting a gift. He'll be distraught. We all will. It's not bad to not have a gift, but it's seen as embarrassing to the family. I don't get it, and nobody has said it, but it's just what goes.

"Hey! Mirabel!" I say, running down the stairs. The casita never lets me slide down ever since I broke my ankle sliding when I was 7.

"Hey, Camilo! You getting ready for Antonio's ceremony?" I chuckled. Mirabel is obsessed with my brothers ceremony, despite the fact we still have another week until it comes.

"No? What, are you?" She glanced at me. "Look, I don't care if he doesn't end up with some gift. It's Abuela and all the adults you should be worried about. But he'll get a gift. Probably." She kept staring, so I slowly left the kitchen.

Actually, I left the whole house, yelling for Dolores to tell our parents. I wasn't sure where I was going, but maybe it would be fun. Maybe.

I switched to look like some random girl in the neighborhood. I just walked and walked until I saw some g- b-...someone. I couldn't quite tell.

The person looked nice. I wanted to talk to the person. But I didn't want to be seen talking to somebody, especially if the person turned out to be a girl! Or wait, nobody would know it was me. I was free to talk to whoever I wanted. Like a wave of relief.
