Matthew was furious as he walked down the side walk. How could his family not remember!? And what made it worse was that they were practically bending over backwards for Alfred!!

He walked down the sidewalk and to the park that was near to the party store. He sat down on a bench next to the playground and looked down. He couldnt hold it in anymore.

Matthew began to cry.

They started off as silent tears before he bagan to quietly sob. After a short minute he dried is eyes and looked up. Matthew let out a squeak of suprise when he saw a small boy in a sailor outfit sitting next to him and looking up at him, curiously.

A few moments of silence happened between the two, makining eye contact before,

"Why were you crying?" The little boy asked, worriedly, "Did you get hurt?"

Matt smiled at him softly. "Yes, in a way..."

"Oh, do you need a band aid because daddy always carries some with him!" The little boy got up to go get a band aid, but was stopped by Matthew.

"No, I don't need a band aid, but thank you." Matthew said softly.

"Oh..." the little boy said as he sat back down on the bench. "My name is Peter by the way. What's yours?! Are you Canadian, you have that accent!? Do you want to be my friend?! Do you want to play with me?! Maybe you'll feel better afterwards!" He said, excitedly.

Matthew laughed, "Whoa, slow down a little. Let's see, my name is Matthew, yes I am Canadian, I would love to be your friend and what do you want to play?" Matthew knew he should probably get back soon, but for now he didn't care. After all, today is supposed to be his day, no one else's.

Peter was right, he was feeling better already.

The moment he said yes, Peter lit up like a Christmas tree. "Oh thank you so much!" Peter exclaimed as he hugged Matthew's arm. "I don't have many friends because people said I'm annoying, but I don't think that's true! Hey can I call you Mattie instead?! Matthew is too long. I know we could play tag if you don't mind, maybe hide and seek! Or would you prefer to go on the swings?"

Matthew laughed at his bubbly-ness.
"Yes you can call me Mattie and we can play whatever you want."

"Yay!" Peter exclaimed as he got up. "Lets go to the swings!" He shouted as he extended his arms and began to run to the swings.

Matthew giggled, running shortly behind him. When Peter got on the swings, Matthew got behind him and began to push him.

"Higher! Higher!" Peter shouted.

Matt laughed before he let out an 'okay' and began to push Peter higher.

For another half-hour, their time was spent like this. Just playing around with different games, going up and down the slide and building ugly sand castles at one point.

It was great. Matthew had never had this much fun on his birthday before.

As they both sat on the bench tiredly Matthew let out a sigh.

"This turned out to be a pretty good birthday after all..." he mumbled, smiling.

It wasn't meant for Peter to hear, but he heard anyways.

"Today is your birthday?!" Peter asked, a little surprised. "Well then why aren't you with your family and friends?"

"It just slipped their mind..."

Peter just looked at and then he understood. That is why Mattie was crying earlier wasn't it.

"Well, for what it's worth," Peter said, "thank you for playing with me and happy birthday." Peter leaned up to give Matthew a peck on the cheek.

Matthew chucked and ruffled the little boys hair. He then looked at the time and saw it was 12:05

"Peter, I need to go now." He said as he stood up. "I was supposed to pick up some things at the store a little over half an hour ago."

Peter looked sad.
"Oh.... will I ever get to see you again Mattie?"

Matthew smiled.
"Of course you will! Here let me tell you a little something, come here."

Peter leand over a little so that Matthew could tell him what he wanted to.

Matthew pointed a few blocks down the street. "You see that street over there, Maple Avenue." Peter nodded. "Well, I live in the green colored house over there."

Peter scrunched up his nose. "You live with grumpy, old Mr. Kirkland?! But you're so nice!" Then Peter's eyes instantly lit up. "But that also means i live only 3 houses away from you! Thats great! Ill be able to see you whenever I want to!"

Matthew smiled, "and you are welcome to come over anytime..... and what do you mean by 'grumpy, old Mr. Kirkland'?

Peter smiled sheepishly. "Well we dont really like eachother all that much.... but I like you!"

Matthew smiled and once again ruffled the little boys's hair. "Goodbye Peter." Matthew said as he stood up and walked away. He heard a 'goodbye' call after him.

Matthew looked both ways before he crossed the street to get to the store. halfway through, he heard the sound of screeching tires and Peter yelling:

"MATTHEW LOOK OUT!"

Matthew turned and saw that an out of control car with a drunk driver had turned the corner.

Matthew had hurriedly tried to run out of the way, but he, unfortunately, wasn't fast enough.

The car had hit he and the last thing he heard were people screaming before fading into darkness.
