Chapter Two…

“Who’s she then?” I asked Matt as he was looking around the outside of my car.

Matt smirked. “That’s Lydia, she moved in a couple of weeks ago.” He informed me.

“She seems funny. Have you spoken to her much?” I inquired, curiously.

He shook his head. “Not much, we’ve had a couple of conversations, why?”

I shrugged. “You just seemed to like her that’s all.”

“Jealous?” He teased.

I laughed. “No, of course not, I was just curious.” I assured him.

“Can we go back inside now you’ve seen the car?” Jord asked. “Its freezing.”

Matt nodded and we headed back towards Matt’s apartment. When were settled back down on the sofas I looked between them. “So where do you think I can find a job then?” I inquired.

Matt looked confused. “Why do you need a job?”

“I have to pay for petrol.” I reminded him and a look of realisation crossed his face. “So come on, what ideas have you got?”

They’re looks both turned to ones of concentration. “Well, there’s the normal jobs people get like waitressing or answering a phone somewhere.” Matt suggested. “I would say working behind a bar, but your not 18 yet.”

“Yeah, I suppose. I really don’t want a job.” I complained. “I’m too lazy.”

Before we could offer anything else, there was a knock on the door. I raised an eyebrow at Matt. “Who have you got coming over?” I asked.

He shrugged. “I didn’t invite anyone.”

I leaned over to whisper to Jord. “I bet it’s Lydia.”

Jord chuckled. “Me too.”

I was then that I realised we had gotten much closer to one another to talk. The air seemed to heat up around me and I tried desperately to stop my cheeks heating up. I hadn’t been this close to him since our last hug, which had been a long time ago. We spread out again just as Matt returned with Lydia in tow. “Told you.” I said to Jord.

Matt looked between us. “What have you been saying about me?” He asked immediately.

We both looked at him innocently. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I assured him.

Matt looked sceptical but ignored it. “Lydia, this is Jordan my brother and Jessica my friend.” He introduced us. “This is Lydia.”

“Hi.” I said politely.

She smiled and greeted us back. “So what are you talking about?” She inquired.

“We’re trying to think what job Jessica can get.” Matt informed her. “She’s only 17 so that rules out quite a few options.”

Lydia looked thoughtful and then beamed at me. “You can come and work at my hairdressers!” She announced. “We need a receptionist and I’m sure they won’t mind hiring someone under 18. You’re still at school right?” She checked. I nodded. “That’s fine, you can work part time. I’ll tell my boss tomorrow and let you know.”

“Thank you!” I exclaimed, grinning widely. That had just solved my job problem, or at least it should have done, as long as Lydia could get me sorted for me. “What’s your surname?” She asked, pulling her phone out.

“McCarthy. Jessica McCarthy.”

“Don’t you prefer to be called Jess?” She asked.

“No! I hate being called Jess.” I told her instantly. Only Jord was allowed to call me Jess, no exceptions.
