Chapter Five

“Of course,” he said. “Meet me by the willow.”

“Thanks,” I said, I hung up the phone and made a quick turn.

I walked cross the street and to the old oak. I dropped my bag on the ground and leaned against the tree, slowly lowering myself into a sitting position. My head rested on the tree and my mind raced on about everything. What will happen when dad finds out I ran away? Will Mitch be able to move out and take me with him? One question mumbled in my head louder then any other, mocking me, almost laughing at me.

Will Drew see I need him now more then ever?

Tonight Drew will probably see how messed up my life is and run screaming for the hills.

“Hey,” I heard someone say from behind me. My eyes snapped open and I looked over to where the voice had come from. Drew stood awkwardly by the tree.

“Hi,” I said, hanging my head again, suddenly regretting calling him.

“What happened?” he asked as he sat down beside me.

“When I got home he just kept yelling at me then he- he,” I shuddered at the memory, a few tears slide down my face, “he hit me.” I started sobbing and Drew had no other choice but to calm me down.

He awkwardly put his arm around me and pulled me into a hug. We sat there for a moment and soon he loosened and the hug got less awkward.

“Do you need a place to stay?” he asked once I got my breathing under control.

“I think I am going to Misty’s,” I sighed, I was now curled into his lap with my head against his chest.

“Need anything else,” he asked, worry in his voice.

“No,” I sighed as I wiped the last tear off my face.

“What will you do after?” he asked.

“After what?” I whispered.

“You can’t stay at Misty’s forever. Where will you go after?” he said.

“My brother is getting a place soon,” I explained, “I think I will stay there.”

“I don’t think your brother likes me,” Drew laughed.

“He doesn’t like you because he knows I do,” I sighed as a played with his fingers.

“I would love to be your boyfriend,” he said and my heart skipped a beat, “but it looks like you need a friend more.” Oh look, my hearts on the floor, broken and crippled.

“I don’t need a friend, I have Misty for that,” I said, anger sweeping over me. I got up, grabbed my bag and started walking toward the road.

“Cassy,” I heard him say, “come back.”

“My name is Cassandra,” I yelled not looking back.

All of a sudden I felt something wrap around my waist, just like the first time we were here together.

“Don’t go,” Drew whispered into my ear.

“Let go of me,” I said through clenched teeth. Suddenly I was being pulled to the ground. I landed softy on Drew , our faces inches apart. He leaned in slowly.

Our lips connected softy, I kissed him back.

“Please stay,” He mumbled once we pulled apart.

“Okay,” I breathed. Drew and I walked back to the tree and resumed our previous position. We sat there for what seemed like forever, didn’t talk, just sat.

“I worry about you,” Drew sighed.

“Why?” I asked, turning to meet his sky blue eyes.

“I don’t know,” he mumbled, “I just do.”

“Don’t worry about me,” I laughed, “things will end in happily ever after.”

“It’s getting late,” he said randomly.

“I should probably go,” I said as I stood up. I gave Drew a quick kiss before hopping over the fence.

I stood in front of Misty’s house. Slowly, I raised my hand to knock on the door. I started to hesitate. What if they don’t let me stay? I forced my hesitant hand onto the solid wood. The door creaked open. Before me stood Misty’s mom, she was tall with long black hair and matching eyes.

“Cassandra?” she asked, eyeing my tear stained eyes and the backpack that hung lazily over my shoulder.

“Hi Mrs. Dangelo,” I said, plastering a fake smile on my face.

“I will get Misty,” she said before disappearing into the house. A few seconds later Misty was standing in front of me.

“What’s wrong?” she asked. She knew me all to well.

“My dad and I had a fight,” I moaned. Mist stepped aside, allowing me into the house. After she pulled me into her room, threw a bucket of ice cream at me and two spoons, and put on loud music she stared intensely at me.

“What happened?” she asked. “You and Drew just left after you dad got to the Mocha Monkey. Then you never even called you best friend.”

I told her everything. The car ride home, the fight with dad, dad hitting me, Mitch saying he was going to move us out and finally about Drew.

“He hit you!” she shrieked. “He has never even touched you before!”

“He was really upset,” I mumbled as I shoveled ice cream into my mouth.

“What about you and Drew ?” she asked, she too was shoveling ice cream in her mouth with the second spoon.

“I don’t know if we are a couple,” I said, “if that’s what you mean.”

“That is what I mean,” she laughed. “How do you not know?”

“We kissed twice but he never said anything about it,” I explained.

“Call him,” she demanded as she shoved her sparkly pink cell phone in my face.

“Are you crazy?” I shrieked, throwing the phone onto the bed.

“Doctor says I am perfectly normal,” she laughed.

“I think you are crazy!” I said.

“I am going to ask my mom if you can stay here awhile,” she said as she left the room.

Misty came back a few minutes later sporting a big smile on her face.

“You can stay in the guest room as long as you need it!” she shrieked.
