I nodded and he got up. I looked down over Marvel.
"Whatcha drawing, Mar?" I asked.
"I drawing you. See?" She showed me her picture. "Dat's you."
"What's on my leg?"
She'd drawn my leg huge!
"It's dat," she said, pointing at my cast.
"Ohhh," I smiled. "It's good. What's that?"
There was a yellow pile beside me.
"Pam cakes!" Mar squealed.
"More Pam cakes? Wow!"
"You love pam cakes," Mar said.
"You're right. I do love pam cakes," I smiled.
"Okay," Pete said coming back into the room. "Brendon is coming with his wife Sarah. You'll love her. And Josh is coming but his wife, Debby, is out of town. So he'll be solo."
"Cool," I said.
"Hey, I looked into your phone plan, and I think we should switch you over to our family plan. Maybe upgrade your phone?"
"Uh, okay. Sure," I said. "You know, you don't have to keep buying me stuff. I stopped being mad at you, like, a week ago."
"I know. But I feel like I have a lot of time to make up for. 15 Christmases. 15 birthdays, whatever."
"Then I have 15 Father's Days to make up for," I grinned.
"Nope, not gonna happen," Dad said. "Parents take care of their kids. Speaking of which, your mom's lawyer called while you were in the hospital. Your mom's will is being read on Monday. You should be there."
"Do I have to? I mean, it's not like we had much for her to leave me."
"Yes. You have to be there," Dad said.
I sighed.
"Fine," I said.
Dad patted my leg and then told me to rest up. He'd go order dinner and his friends would be over in a little while.
"Any particular dish you like?" He asked me.
"General Tao Chicken?" I said.
"Done. I'll get rice, too," he replied.
I lay back on the sofa and relaxed. Looking over at the coffee table, I saw the bottle of water sitting there and remembered I was supposed to be drinking more. I tried to sit up but the pain from my broken ribs made me cry out. Dad came running back in.
"What happened? Are you okay?"
"Yeah," I said, holding my side and breathing heavily. "I tried to sit up so I could get that bottle of water."
"Here, let me help you."
It didn't feel much better, but having Pete help definitely made it feel a bit less painful.
"Want anything for the pain?" Pete asked.
"Advil? Or Naproxen if you have?"
"The doc gave you Percocet. Want those?"
"No, thanks. Advil should be fine," I said, pulling myself up a bit more into a sitting position. Pete handed me the bottle of water and I chugged it down.
"Want another one?"
"Sure, please," I said. I leaned back on the sofa.
Mar came back with the bottle of water.
"Dwink dis," she said. "Papa says you need dis."
"Thanks Mar," I smiled.
"Jaime?" She asked.
"Yeah, Mar?"
"You still sad about your momma?"
"Yeah. I am. I miss her," I said, trying not to cry.
"But," she said. "Are you happy wif my momma and wif Papa?"
"You know what, Mar? I was a bit mad before and sad, because my momma didn't tell me your papa was also my papa. And I was sad because
my momma died. But now, I'm happy. Because now I know who my papa is, and I have the cutest little sister in the world," I said. She grinned and hugged me.
"Ow, ow! Mar! Boo boos! My ribs have boo boos!"
She jumped back.
"Sowwy!" She said, looking like she was about to cry.
"It's okay, don't be sad. The hug was great. And you can't see my ribs are broken like you can see my leg is broken."
"I drawed on your leg," she said and pointed to some colours scribbled on my cast.
"I thought that was you," I smiled. "It's really pretty."
