I've been working for a total of six and a half hours today. Only one hour and thirty minutes to go. And I can't wait to get out of here.

This is my only shift this week that wasn't a double, and tomorrow is my first day off in forever. I just want to sleep in my bed for hours on end.

"y/n!" a waitress named Lexi shouts at me, smacking her gum, "can you take table seven?"

"Yeah, sure." I say, grabbing my pad.

I walk to go take their orders. Another waitress bumps into me after giving someone their food.

"Oops, sorry," she smiles at me.

"Don't worry about it," I say before walking up to the table.

"Hi, my name is y/n," I start off, already looking at my pad, "how may I take your order?"

"Uh," the person says, not answering my question.

"Do you need a few minutes?" I ask, finally looking up.

I must look like I've seen a ghost.

Mostly because I have. Because right in front of me is Nick, who looks as if he's seen a ghost.

My heart beats fast. This is not what I was expecting.

He shouldn't be here. Well, I guess there's no law against him being here, and he didn't know I worked here but still.

I can't breathe. I feel like I'm burning from the inside out.

I thought I was getting over him, but that was before I saw him. This is the first time since that night.

My heart wrestles with itself. Part of me wants to jump into his arms and ask for him to take me back, and the other wants to slap him and run away.

He took our relationship in its most vulnerable form and shattered it on the curb. I don't know if I can go back after that, but still a part of me, a big one, still cares deeply for him.

I stare at him for a few seconds. "I will be right back," I say finally.

I don't wait for an answer before I turn to go to the kitchen.

I'm still breathing heavily when I walk in. Danny gets one glance at me, and he sets all his stuff down.

"Hey, hey what's wrong?"

"It's too much," I cry, "I can't do it."

"It's okay," he holds me in a hug for a moment, "We can figure something out."

I almost laughed. Danny doesn't even know why I'm crying, and he's already saying he'll fix it.

How in the world does he expect himself to sew my heart back together? I don't remember him being a heart surgeon as a side job.

"y/n, get back to your tables." Lexi says as she walks back out. "Seven needs his order taken."

I shake my head a little bit. "I can't do it."

"You take a break," he says, "I'll take care of seven, and someone else will get the rest. I'll send a milkshake your way."

I smile. "Thank you."

"Of course,"

I take my break in the back today. As promised, Danny brought me my favorite shake.

I calmed down after a little while. I know I have to go back out there. I just have to hope he's almost finished eating now.

I slowly walk to the swinging door that leads to the diner. I immediately avoid eye contact with Nick. I walk past and do all my other tables, knowing Danny has table seven covered. I did notice Nick hasn't gotten his food yet.

I'm not sure how Danny can cook and serve, but he's doing it very well. He's honestly really good at what he does.

I take orders and bring out food to all the tables. We're really busy, so I'm just bustling around.

I try to slide past Danny as he places food on Nick's table, but he takes a step too quickly, running into me.

"Oh, sorry sweetheart," he says.

I freeze for a moment. I can see Nick's head look up when he hears it.

"It's fine." I say dryly, knowing I'll explain to Danny later.

Danny calls me that all the time. It's normal. It was bound to happen at some point, just not to a customer named Nick.

There's nothing wrong with it, expect that it slipped in front of Nick. Nick doesn't know that's normal, or that nothing is happening with Danny and I. this is horrible.

Not that it should even mean anything to Nick. He broke up with me almost two months ago. For all I know, he could have a girlfriend.

I shake that thought out of my head completely. No. I don't even want to think about that.

I move on from the table. I pay close attention to that table from now on.

"Did you give Nick- I mean table seven their check?" I ask Danny.

"Um, yeah he's about to leave. Why do you know-" he pauses for a second before a look of realization hits him. "Oh my gosh, that's your ex."

I nod.

He face palms, "And I called you?"

"Yupp," I turn a slight shade of pink.

"y/n, I am so sorry. Please, please forgive me." he begs.

I laugh. "It's fine. We're, uh, broken up anyways."

"Okay, well, I'm really sorry either way."

I walk out of the kitchen when there's food ready. I give it to the people behind Nick's table.

He taps my arm as I walk past to get back to the kitchen.

"What? I whisper, not entirely sure I want to talk to him.

"Are you?" he starts to ask. I can tell he is unsure on how to ask it without sounding jealous.

"No, Danny and I are just friends." I say dryly, apparently that's my only personality tonight.

"Oh," he says, looking relieved, "since when are you a waitress?" he asks.

"Since I lost my last job." I spit out, "Gotta go, sorry."

I hated that interaction. I hated every bit of it. I don't know if I was ready to talk to him yet, and I definitely didn't do well. I want a second chance, but already know very well that I would still mess it up.

I just want to go home. This has been too much today. I was not emotionally ready to see my ex today. If I had known, I would've done my hair or something.

Just kidding, probably wouldn't have shown up if we're honest.

I count down the minutes until work is over. Exactly thirty-seven. I can't wait to go home and relax all weekend.
