Chapter Four... The Truth

I had led myself to believe I could trust Ben. I had let him do things to me that nobody else had ever done. He had taken my virginity, and had made me the sexual being that I had now become. He had touched every inch of my naked body with his hands, and had made me feel safe. I trusted him...

So why was I now suddenly doubting my trust in him?

Brooke was my best friend. She knew everything about me, and she was the only person who knew I was sleeping with my teacher. And I trusted her. More than even my own parents. Not known as a liar, it had been my friend who had led me to my new uncertainty.

"Why don't you just go to his house and confront him?" Brooke suggested.

"Because," I sighed. "I told him I trusted him. And if I turn up there snooping, then I'm proving myself to be a liar and that's just not something I like!"

"Okay, fine," Brooke groaned, rolling her eyes. "But yesterday I told you that I saw him with his 'ex' wife, and ever since you bring the subject up every chance you get. It's doing your head in, Lana. You need to know the truth... it's just you."

"I know," I replied. "But... I still don't like the idea of going to his house."

"Well, I don't like that you're sleeping with him," she frowned. "We all have things we don't like. And I don't trust him. He's gonna hurt you, Lana."

"You don't know that," I sighed. "I wanna see the best in him."

"Okay, Lana," Brooke groaned, rolling her eyes. "I like seeing the best in people, too. But I don't trust him. He's a school teacher screwing his student to start with. That's pretty untrustworthy. And he's lying to everyone."

"So am I!" I snapped. "I'm letting him do it. I'm lying to everyone! I hate it! I hate it!"

Brooke took a step back and then softened her expression. She was worried about me... really worried. She was making me doubt my own judgement, and I guess I couldn't blame her. The man I had sex with every night was once married... possibly still married. He was a father... of a girl my age!

I was kidding myself thinking he was telling me the truth, and I was determined to find out the truth all of a sudden.

"I have to know, B," I said finally. "I have to know if he's still married or not."

"So... does that mean you're going to his house?" Brooke asked slowly.

"Uh... yeah," I said confidently. "I'm gonna confront him and find out the truth."

"He's lying, I'm telling you," she sighed.

"Where does Ben live?" I asked her hopefully.

"How the hell should I know?!" Brooke snapped. "You're the one who's bare back lies on his bed every night whilst he pleasures you! That's something you should know!"

"He never told me where he lived," I groaned. "He uh... he said that he couldn't take me to his house, because some of the other teachers knew where he lived."

"Uh-huh," Brooke said, raising an eyebrow.

"He's not a total liar," I said uncertainly. "He's told some truths."

"All liars can actually tell the truth occasionally," Brooke admitted.

"But it's awfully suspiscious..." I finished with a sigh.

Brooke and I obtained a phone book and managed to find his address. But better than that, as we drove around the streets of our town, looking for Ben's house, we spotted his car heading down into a cul-de-sac. Brooke, who was driving, excitedly turned to follow the car as we sat at a bit of a distance from it. Ben drove all the way down to the end of the street, in the cul-de-sac. He pulled into the drive and we waited until he'd gone inside before Brooke stopped the car.

"Go tell him off!" Brooke hissed, grinning.

I got out of the car and stormed up to the door. I hesitated before I tapped lightly on the door. A young girl answered, smiling.

"Can I... help you?" the girl asked.

"I'm looking for Ben," I said with a small smile.

"Why are you looking for my dad?" she asked nosily. "He's busy... with my mom. So you can't see him at the moment."

"I..." I began.

"Sadie! Who's at the door?" a woman's voice called.

"Some young chick!" Sadie called back.

I got extremely nervous when a woman appeared at the door. She was tall, beautiful and in her mid thirties. Her red curls hung above her shoulders, and she wore glasses.

"Can I help you?" the woman spoke.

"She's after dad," Sadie sneered.

"Why are you looking for my husband?" the woman asked, and my face fell.

"Husband?" I repeated.

Learning the truth didn't help me at all... I only wished that I had never come.
