.7. acting different

Start from the beginning

"Oh okay," I walk in a little less careful, "We brought you fries and a milkshake."

He takes the bag from me and peeks inside. "Oh thank you, I was pretty hungry actually."

"I figured. There's nothing in that fridge of yours," I say as I stand awkwardly in his room.

He places the bag on his desk behind him. He's turns all the way around towards me on his chair. He takes a sip of the milkshake. "This is pretty good,"

"I got the same one. I liked it. Clay got this fruit one that was healthier, but I said screw that." I laugh a little at my own joke. I notice he's not giving me much to go off of. I need to get out of here before I do something stupid.

"You've got great taste then," he chuckles. He takes another sip before placing it on the desk.

"Uh, are y-" I'm about to ask if he was doing alright and if there was anything that I did wrong to him. But Clay walks into the room before I could.

"You missed it, Nick!" Clay says as he bursts through the door, "Our waitress was so attractive,"

I roll my eyes. Clay was practically speechless when she came to take our orders. I almost had to order for him since he was so incapable.

"Another time, then," Nick says. I don't know if it was just me, but he didn't seem as excited to match Clay's energy as he usually is.

"Who are you talking to?" Clay motions towards the monitor, unphased by his friend's reaction.

Maybe I'm overthinking all of this.

"Uhh, George and Quackity," Nick turns back to the screen, "You want to say hey? Nobody is streaming."

"Of course," he says, "unmute,"

Nick does as he's asked and unmutes. He glances at me once awkwardly. I consider slipping out the door to go home, but I don't want to go without saying goodbye.

"HIII" Clay yells into the microphone.

Only Nick can hear their replies since he's wearing headphones.

"Hold on, hold on, guys," he says after listening for a second, "I'm going to put you on like a speaker or something."

He unplugs his headphones.

"HELLLO" and "HII" is screaming from the computer. I recognize their voices a little bit.

"GEORGE" Clay says.

Nick rolls his eyes as they talk for a minute.

"Guys," Nick says, "guess what I got."

"Laid?" Quackity says before laughing.

"He could never," Clay shakes his head.

"What did you get, Sapnap? Tell us, tell us." George asks.

Nick smiles proudly, "I got a milkshake and fries. Dream and y/n brought them for me."

"Aww bestie goals," George says semi-sarcastically.

"Wait, is y/n Dream's childhood friend that you both said was-"

"AHHHFKFJBDJF" Dream and Sapnap go at the same time.

"What?" George laughs.

"Oh," Quackity says, "is she there?"

"GOT TO GO BYEE" Sapnap leaves the call.

Clay turns to me with a guilty look on his face.

"What was that?" I ask, trying not to laugh. What in the world was all the fuss about?

"Nothing," Clay says, "nothing at all."

Nick messes with something on his computer.

I frown. Why is he acting so strange? I decide to ignore whatever that was all about. I'm not in the mood to dig for details. I do wish Nick could look me in the eyes when he talks to me, but not everything we want comes true. "Well, if you guys are done with whatever that was, then I'm going to head out." I say, pointing to the exit.

"I'll walk you out," Clay says as he goes to head for the door.

I turn to see Nick still on his computer. I realize he won't say goodbye unless I do. "Bye, Nick,"

"What?" he turns to me, "oh bye."

My heart shrinks a little bit. Clay walks me to the front door and waits as he watches me pull out of the driveway.

The whole ride home I contemplate what I could've possibly done to offend or hurt Nick.

And I can't think of a single one.
