Ch. 5 I.E.D.

With a player injured, the game came to a pause. Piper walked over to her girlfriend and the alpha, while they all waited for it to resume. Liam joined them after a moment. He had gone to talk to Finstock, now that Scott believed the assassin was targeting the beta.

"I talked to Coach. I'm out for the rest of the game," he told them.

"What are you gonna do?" Kira asked Scott.

"I don't know. Something's still not right. We're missing something," Scott told them. He turned to Piper. "You sure Ayla hadn't figured anything out?"

"Nothing she would tell me. She just went inside," she told him.

The alpha frowned. Given that from what he knew, the assassin was still on the field, he wasn't that concerned about his girlfriend disappearing for a moment.

"Guys," Stiles called, walking over to them. "Lydia just broke another third of the list."

"Am I on it?" Liam wondered.

"No, but someone else is," he told them, holding out his phone to show them the list.

Piper's heart dropped as she saw the name on it. "Brett, the guy Ayla just went to check on," she said.

Everyone frowned. "And who isn't worth half as much as she is," Stiles noticed, turning to his best friend. But Scott had already taken off running towards the locker room.

By the time Ayla reached the hallway next to the locker room, she could already see someone laying on the ground in the doorway.

She went running into the locker room, finding Brett on the floor. He started to push himself away from the she-wolf, but she just walked over to him. She looked down at his leg, frowning at the yellowish gash she could see. "Is that wolfsbane?" she asked.

Brett's eyes suddenly widened. "Behind you," he warned, just before a wire wrapped around the Hale's throat.

Ayla stumbled back as she felt the searing hot cord cut into her throat. "Now, I was hoping for your alpha boyfriend, but you're still more money than any of the others," the girl holding the cord said. Ayla didn't recognize the voice as she began to try to force her fingers under the cord. She felt her fingers burning against it as she did so, but that was better than her throat. The girl pulled it tighter, only making Ayla more determined to get her hand underneath it. Who cared if she lost a finger? It was better than her head. She released a breath as she finally managed to pull the wire off her throat.

The girl looked at the werewolf in surprise, but didn't have time to react before she was thrown into the wall by Scott. Ayla gave a sigh of relief as the wire stopped burning her hand. She turned towards the alpha, who immediately moved forward to see if she was okay. He placed a hand on her shoulder as he looked at the healing burn on her neck in concern. Ayla glanced towards the girl, still breathing heavily. "I could've handled that," she told her boyfriend.

He sent her a look. "You could've lost your head," he reminded.

"I was fine," Ayla argued.

The alpha just sighed in annoyance, before pulling her against him. Ayla didn't argue with that, relaxing against him. "You know, scaring you every once in a while is only fair with how often you scare me," she told him. She heard him scoff at her words as he held onto her.

Stiles ran into the locker room, making the two pull away to turn towards him. "You okay?" he asked the she-wolf, given that there was still a faint red line on her throat.

She nodded. "Yeah, but I think I need to call Derek," she told them, glancing towards Brett.

"And I think you better call your Dad," Scott told his best friend.

Okay, I love that last Scayla moment. They're overall just adorable this season. And believe me when I say that Liam and Ayla will eventually get closer. But there is literally so much for me to cover in this show, it's hard to find time to write bonding scenes between the two of them. We'll definitely see Ayla's protective side come out when it comes to Liam as time goes on, though.
