Meredith woke up early in the morning. She had a feeling today was the day she'd have to explain everything to Shepherds so she had to be ready. Amelia was up early as well, she was not ready to face her sisters again after their last encounter, especially after she didn't tell them that she had a baby, plus she had to tell them their brother was alive, so she knew they'd do everything to blame that on her too.

Derek came home early too. He didn't know how his mother would react when he'd see her son alive after thinking he was dead for five years. He remembered very well how shocked Meredith and Amelia were, she didn't expect a better reaction from others. Byt he couldn't wait to see them. Annoying or not they were his family and he loved them unconditionally. Family was something he always believed in. It was his number one priority until he made his own. Then Meredith and the kids became his priority until the job in dc came into the picture. It was never his dream but he was too blind to see it then. That's the reason he had to live without his family for five years, that's why everyone had to think he was dead for so long. He was the reason everyone had to suffer and he felt guilty about it, but now was the time to get his old life back, his family back and he was ready to go through every inconvenience to do that.

"Hey" he saw Meredith coming downstairs pulling him out of his thoughts.
"Hey" he replied with a smile. He was always happier when she was around, like she was his sun who lit up his universe.
"Are you ready for today?"
His face changed from a smile to a frown. She knew exactly how he felt, or at least, she tried to. She had no idea how hard it could've been to know your family thinks you're gone forever while you're forced to work. She knew he suffered a trauma, and he knew she did too. They understood each other, they always did. Even the moments they wanted to hate each other, even when they made each other mad, they knew exactly what the other one felt and why they did something so stupid, that's why they couldn't stay mad at each other for long. Even now, all those years later they were looking into each other's eyes and they could see right through each other's souls.

She put her hand on his cheek and softly caressed it.
"It's going to be alright" she said soothingly as she moved closer. He moved closer to her so their noses were almost touching. They leaned in for a kiss but they were interrupted by the doorbell. They instantly pulled away and looked at each other with knowing looks. They knew it was time.

"I'll go get it" Meredith offered.
"No it should be me, it'll be easier for you that way."
"Yeah if you want to give them a heart attack" he smiled at her comment.
"I'll give it a try" He went to get the door.

Meredith was nervous. The last time she saw Derek's family was at his funeral and now she had to face them again, this time Derek being very much alive. She heard the door getting opened. She went to see how it was going. She saw Amelia approaching the door as well. They both moved closer and saw Derek at the open door looking at Carolyn, Nancy, Lizz, and Kathleen.
"Hey" he said smiling "it's been a long time."

They all stood there in shock. No one expected a different reaction from them.
"Derek?" Carolyn looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"Hey ma" He hugged her. Everyone could hear Carolyn’s sobs. Lizzy, Kathleen and Nancy stood there watching them, tears in their eyes as well. Derek hugged all of them. They still couldn't get over the fact that their brother was standing in front of them. They buried him years ago. They grieved him years ago. They got over it years ago, never fully but still.

"How?" That was all Carolyn could say. She was frozen. Since Amelia mentioned Derek being alive she couldn't believe it but she hoped and prayed that could be true that she could see her son alive again but she didn't let the hope get to her. She didn't have it in her anymore to go through something so painful again. She didn't let herself believe it until she saw him alive with her own eyes.

"Why don't you come inside and we can talk there" Meredith suggested.
That was the first time Carolyn and her daughters noticed two women standing at the doorstep with them.
That's when it hit Carolyn. She hadn't thought about what her daughter-in-law must've felt before, but she could see it now. She could see the pain in her eyes. She remembered when she last saw her five years ago, at Derek's funeral. She remembered her wearing a black dress, holding Zola's and Bailey's tiny hands in her own. She remembered her eyes, her fragile body barely having any sign of being alive. She remembered her sitting alone, looking at the emptiness in a room filled with people. She remembered her hand softly caressing her stomach. She remembered the day she buried her own husband, and she saw herself in her. She remembered every tiny bit of pain she felt when she lost her husband and couldn't help but feel sympathy for her daughter-in-law. All of those feelings Meredith felt after losing a loved one were familiar to her except one: getting them back. And now all she could think about was how was she holding up after going through all of that.

Then suddenly her eyes noticed her daughter, standing so grown up next to Meredith. It was almost two years since she hasn't seen her and she was already changed. She knew it was motherhood that changed her. She knew she was going through something really painful too and now all she wanted was for her to be fine. She knew she wasn't the best mother for her. She knew Amelia had to go through more than her sisters could possibly imagine. That's why they didn't understand her, she knew all of that very well. And now, when Derek was back, she hoped they would come closer together as a family.

"We should go inside" Derek agreed with Meredith and led everyone to the living room.
"Can I get you anything?" Meredith asked.
"We're fine here darling" Carolyn always liked Meredith but after she went through the same as Carolyn did, she sympathized with her even more. She saw Nancy frowning from the corner of her eye. She knew she never really liked Meredith but she thought that at least in a moment like this she would give her some respect. She eyed her daughter giving her a sign to be nice to her.

"Derek, I think they deserve an explanation" Amelia tried to start a conversation.
"Right" He sat next to his mother and started telling a very long story. Meredith and Amelia sat next to each other. Carolyn could see that they were close. She felt they helped each other through rough times and she liked that. She always wanted Meredith to be closer to their family and it was nice to see that finally happening. It was nice to see that her daughter wasn't all alone.

When Derek was done telling the story everyone started asking questions. They were curious about every detail and to be honest, they had every right to be. That's when they heard the baby's little screams and the sound of someone coming downstairs. Then they saw a very familiar tall man approaching them with a baby in his hands.
"Hi" Link smiled weirdly.
"Hi" everyone said, Nancy frowning again.
"Come here little guy, let's meet your grandma and aunties" Amelia stood up and took Scout in her hands. He smiled and put his head in the crook of her neck. Everyone smiled at the view.
"So, this is auntie Lizz, and this is Nancy... That's auntie Kathleen and this is grandma Carolyn" she smiled as she handed her son to her mother.

Carolyn was amazed by her grandson in her hands. At this moment, she couldn't help but feel proud of her daughter.
"Hi sweetheart, I'm your grandma" she smiled.
"What's his name?" Lizzie asked.
"Scout" Link smiled and sat next to Amelia.
"Hi Scout" Lizzie said sweetly.

Then they heard footsteps on the stairs again and they saw Zola, Bailey and Ellis coming.
"Come here, say hi to grandma and aunties" Derek said to them.
"Hi" all of the kids said together.
"Hi grandma" Ellis run over and hugged Carolyn. She was in awe of her granddaughter, since she had never seen her before.
"Hi sweetheart" Carolyn hugged her tighter "She's so much like you" she looked at Meredith and smiled. Meredith smiled back.
Derek watched his family reunion and couldn't help but feel happy. After all this time he felt complete again. All he needed now was Meredith by her side, and he was sure he was going to get that back soon too.
