Having everyone staring right at me, knowing that they weren't expecting me to dress up like this expect for Mrs Robertson and Julia who were the first people to walk up to me.
Julia being the friendly and sweet Spanish lady that she is, wrapped her arms around me after taking the full sight of me, "Oh Jennifer, you look absolutely gorgeous!!"
Laughing shyly while hugging Julia back before stepping out as Mrs Robertson said, "Truly you do, Ms Hawkins. Last time you've told us that you would be doing a hula performance for a solo, I wouldn't think that I would actually see the day that anyone would make such a bold, risky decision."
I've spent nearly two hours trying to convince Mrs Robertson to let me do a hula dance today, because she was concern that Sapphire might receive a low score for the female soloist performance.
I had to fight with more than words to get the green light, even after showing my choreography on Thursday after practice, Mrs Robertson needed a little push to make this happen.
"May you do well today, Ms Hawkins." Both ladies walked away to speak to one of the other head leaders from other universities and colleges after giving me encouraging squeeze on my shoulder when I spotted Dad leading my Grandma and Grandpa through the crowd.
When I saw them wearing Hawaiian shirt and dress, my knees nearly buckled under me since I wasn't expecting to see them here at all. Plane tickets from Hawaii to Los Angeles aren't cheap at all, seeing them actually here really blew my mind.
Walking to them with Haylie and Becca following, greeting them all brightly while feeling overjoy to have them here. Having Grandma and Grandpa hold me in a group hug, having the sweet scent of Plumeria, coconut and sea hovering in my nostrils, "I thought you couldn't make it."
Giving gentle, guilty smiles before Grandpa said, "We saved enough money to fly here. After hearing that our little pua 'ono dance on stage than watching a poorly video of her."
'Pua 'ono means sweet flower in Hawaiian, it's one of the many thing that Grandpa and Grandma calls me, Rebecca and Haylie. Grandpa doesn't like watching videos of me or any of us dancing or singing, because it would either be Johnny or Uncle James who wouldn't stop moving the camera around.
Or they wouldn't stop talking in the background, so whenever he and Grandma had enough money to book plane tickets, they would fly in to sit in the front row to all of their grandchildren and great grandchildren's concerts and sport games.
Laughing for Grandpa's classic reason for flying to Los Angeles, if it wasn't for the dancing, someone's birthday or any special event, then it would be for spending some time away from home. That's when a thought came to mind, "But wait, I thought wasn't any more tickets to book?"
"Thank your Dad for that, honey," Grandma squeeze my cheeks before kissing them both like she always does whenever she sees any of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. "The night when he heard that you have a solo, he phoned us to let us know that he'll buy our tickets and will have the guest room ready last night for us. There's no way I was going to miss watching my Anela doing a hula dance now that she's a young lady."
"For the next solo of yours, you can buy their tickets, Ipo." Dad winked at me with a smile before letting me hug him again for doing this after being called sweetheart in Hawaiian.
I've always enjoyed having my grandparents in Los Angeles, they get to experience everything that we're doing without missing out on times like this. "Now let's see your outfit again."
Stepping out of Dad's arms, doing a small turn for Grandma and Grandpa to take in my hula clothes which looks like thy were happy to see me in. Until Grandma held her chain while slightly titling her head to the side, "There's some things missing, Anela. Just two little details missing."
