Chapter 56: Weathering Storms

Start from the beginning

Zhilan hummed. "How about I wait for you? We can leave together."

Siyang let out a breath. "I'm sure you want to go home. You don't have to."

"It's still bright out. I can wait."

"Are you sure?"

She laughed. "It's fine. I'll be here."

As he continued, she sat down and played on her phone. Occasionally, she would glance up and watch him. His eyes were focused on the task in front of him.

No matter what, he works so hard.

She looked away and back at her phone.

After half an hour, he looked like he was done. Zhilan stood up and gathered her belongings. She waited for him to do the same until she noticed he was looking at another clipboard.

He's about to do more work instead of leaving.

"I think I'm going to stay longer. You should probably go. I don't want to keep you here too late."

Yup, there it is.

Zhilan shook her head, half amused and half exasperated. "Siyang."

"I'll try to be quick. You go. I'll see you around."

She walked up to him and gently pulled the clipboard from his hands. "I'm sure this can wait. Relax. It's the weekend."

He sighed, but didn't move.

"If you don't start walking, I'll drag you to your house."

The corners of his mouth quirked up. "You've never been to my house."

She blinked as that registered in her mind. "Huh. I haven't. Why not?"

"I guess it never came up before."

Well, that's not fair.

He tried to take the clipboard from her, but she stepped back. "No. Go home."

"I will. Soon."

"Go or this stays with me."

"Zhilan." He sighed.

Quick, what might get him out the door?

She racked her brain and an idea came. "I got it. Let's make a deal."

Siyang raised an eyebrow. "What kind of deal?"

"I will give you back this clipboard if we go to your house right now."

He blinked, not expecting that. "What?"

She grinned. "We go to your house and hang out for a bit. After that, you'll get it back. That simple."

"This sounds like an excuse to just go to my house."

Zhilan shrugged. "In part, but I do want you to relax. Do we have a deal?"

A beat of silence followed and he grabbed his belongings.

"Let's go."
