a canopy of tangerine ivy

hang from the rusted bars from above the table

hanging pots of bougainvillea brush the floor

in a sweet october kiss

borders of pansy petals flutter like

butterflies in the breeze

rows of marigolds like balls

of bunched up silk and lace

shades of ripe honey and hay

the pond mirrors

the baby blue sky

its surface pellucid

willow tendrils fall into the water

like strands of apricot hair

tumbling into silvery depths of arcane enigma

my eyes wander

to the page in your sketchbook

my gaze falling off the edge of the paper

the same way alice

had jumped off of it

you draw and write and i watch

watching your eyes as they fall into a trance

watch the dark blue in them intensify

their color like a lullaby

your skin is pale

as if the wind blew their colors away

and i suddenly wonder what it would feel like

to touch your face

looking at you makes the numbness lift a little

i'm not as cold inside

for a split second

my lungs don't drown in the poison of the world

and oxygen fill my veins

and something feeble moves in my chest

and i wonder if it's the heartbeat i lost
