Luke was sat with his chin on the table, dead silent. Greyson sat down beside him, gently placing a hand on his back. Luke turned his head to face her. "I should be the one comforting you, not the other way around. He was your dad, not mine." He said quietly. Greyson let out a short breath of amusement.
"You were closer to him than I was." She said as she ran her fingers through Luke's hair. Luke gave a half-hearted shrug. "This was part of his plan all along. He never planned on attempting to defeat Vader. He did what he had to do. But I promise you'll see him again. Sooner than you think." Greyson said and gave Luke a sad smile. Luke just sighed and nodded.
"I can't believe he's gone." Luke said as Leia joined them at the table, sitting on the other side of the boy.
"Nobody's ever really gone, Luke." Greyson said.
"There wasn't anything you could've done." Leia added.
Han walked into the room briefly. "Come on, buddy, this ain't over yet." He said before disappearing again. The three disbanded running to their respective places aboard the ship. Leia and Greyson ran to the cockpit where Chewie was, and Luke followed Han.
"Here they come." Leia said as fighters flew in their direction and shot at the ship. The lights flickered but stayed on and the ship shook. Greyson had gotten used to this, Han was always getting them into some sort of trouble. The rocking of the ship used to make her sick but at this point, it felt almost normal to her. Han and Luke shot at the fighters, who were dodging their shots. The ships were coming in faster than the boys could take them out. There was a blast somewhere behind them in the ship. "We've lost the lateral controls." Leia said to Han over the mic.
"Don't worry, she'll hold together." Han replied.
The two girls watched from the cockpit as the fighters blew up. Greyson couldn't help but feel a little sense of pride. She felt proud to be by the boys' side.
"Got him! I got him!" Luke yelled happily. Greyson laughed when she heard him come over the mic.
"There's still two more of them out there!" Leia said. Han and Luke kept firing until the last two were destroyed. "We did it!" Leia exclaimed excitedly as she pulled Greyson and Chewie into a hug.
"O-okay group hug, very nice." Greyson said awkwardly as she patted Leia's back.
"Not a bad bit of rescuing, huh?" Han said as he and Luke joined the girls and Wookiee back in the cockpit. "You know, sometimes I amaze even myself." He added cockily.
"That doesn't sound too hard," Leia muttered. "They let us go. It's the only explanation for the ease of our escape."
"Easy? You call that easy?"
"They're tracking us."
"Not this ship sister."
Leia shook her head. "At least the information R2 has is still intact."
"What's he carrying that's so important?" Greyson asked.
"The technical readouts of that battle station," Leia replied. "I only hope that when the data's analyzed a weakness can be found. It's not over yet."
"It is for us, sister," Han said. "Look, I ain't in this for your revolution and I'm not in it for you, Princess. I'm expecting to be paid. We're in for the money."
Greyson let Han speak for her, but at this point, it felt as if it were so much more than a rescue mission. The plan was to help the princess, get the money, then get the hell out of there. But now that her father was dad, Greyson felt as if she was responsible for Luke as if she had to stick around for his sake. He was only 19, he was basically still a kid, and she knew things were only going to get more traumatizing for the boy. He would need a shoulder to lean on, and Greyson felt as if she should be that shoulder.
"You needn't worry about your reward. If money is all that you two love, then that's what you'll receive." Leia said as she got up and left. "Your friends are quite the mercenary. I wonder if they really care about anything or anyone." Leia said to Luke as they switched positions.
"I care," Luke said quietly as she walked off. "So, what do you think of her, Han?"
"I'm trying not to, kid." Han replied.
"Good." Luke muttered while nodding his head. Greyson cringed.
Han looked back, smirking, at Greyson who shook her head and kept mouthing no. Han smiled and turned back to Luke. Greyson rolled her eyes. "Still, she's got a lot of spirit," Han said. Luke slowly looked up and over at Han. "What do you think? You think a princess and a guy like me-"
"No." Luke cut Han off before he could finish. Luke's face flushed and he looked down at his lap. Han smiled and laughed quietly.
The moment they were inside the base Leia ran into an older man's arms. Greyson looked around unsure of how to act. "We're just dropping them off, getting our money, then leaving," Han said quietly to her. Greyson nodded confused. "You're getting all tense and weird, you do that when you're uncomfortable. We'll be out of here soon." Han put his arm around Greyson's shoulder and pulled her close.
Greyson, Han, and Chewbacca stuck around long enough to listen to the plans for destroying the Death Star. While the man giving directions was talking Chewie looked over at Han who immediately looked away. "Then man your ships, and may the Force be with you." The man finished his speech and the pilots began to get up.
Han and Greyson were loading their reward into the Falcon when Luke walked over to them, wearing the orange uniform the rest of the pilots were wearing. Greyson had a gross feeling in her stomach seeing Luke. She was worried that something bad was going to happen to him. "So you got your reward and you're just leaving, then?" Luke asked, obviously upset.
"That's right, yeah," Han replied. "We got some old debts, we gotta pay off with this stuff. Even if we didn't, you don't think we'd be fool enough to stick around here, do ya?"
"Come with us." Greyson blurted. She didn't want Luke joining the rebellion's mission, fearing more for luke's safety than he was.
"Yeah. You're pretty good in a fight, we could use ya." Han agreed.
"Come on. Why don't you take a look around. You know what's about to happen, what they're up against. They could use a good pilot like you, you're turning your back on them." Luke counter-argued
"What good's a reward if you aren't around to use it?" Han asked.
"Don't say that Han, you make it sound like he's gonna die." Greyson complained.
"Attacking that battle station isn't really my idea of courage." Han continued ignoring Greyson. "It's more like suicide."
Luke nodded. "Alright. Well, take care of yourselves. I guess that's what you're best at isn't it?" Luke spat as he started to walk off.
"Hey Luke," Han said stopping the blonde. "May the Force be with you."
"Always." Greyson added. She didn't want this to be the last time she saw Luke, or Leia as a matter of fact, but it was looking like that was how it was gonna go. Luke said nothing, didn't even smile. He just walked away.
