My heart stirs deliciously in my chest. Why did I fight this for so long?
"Have you ever had room service before?" Crew asks our son and I have to laugh, because he doesn't even understand the concept of it. He's definitely never had it though, because we've never had enough money to even stay in a hotel, let alone order overpriced food.
It's this thought that sends me on a spiral. My anxious mind overworks as I put little bits of pancake into my mouth.
This hotel cost a lot of money.
This breakfast cost a lot of money.
Crew's Land Rover cost a lot of money.
I know how Crew gets his money.
All of those scared feelings I had four years ago back in Missoula come crashing over me like a wave. I know what goes on behind the scenes of a motorcycle club. Crew is the Vice President. That means that he's heavily involved in all of their shit. That means that he's got a lot to lose if something goes down.
Loyal soldiers always fall in line. It's what my dad told me back in the day before he went off to prison. He took the fall so Brick, the President at the time, could stay clean. Gulping down a syrupy pancake, I glance at Crew. He's cutting up bites and feeding them to Penn, making sure he doesn't get the sheets sticky.
We're like a Norman fucking Rockwell painting. Saturday morning, breakfast in bed. Only I don't think the men in his paintings were members of a motorcycle club.
As quickly as things changed last night when he showed up at the door, I feel like they've done another belly flip and I'm back to where we started. Why couldn't I have fallen in love with a doctor?
"So what's next?" Crew asks, looking up at me with a smile.
"Next?" I choke down a bite.
"Yeah, what do we do after breakfast?"
Oh, thank God. Because I have no idea what the next step is in our lives.
"We get dressed and we... I don't know." I look around our hotel room, "find a place to live I guess."
