Ch.1

Breakfast at the Kang household was quiet as usual. It would be strange if your family were to actually talk to one another. Why would you want to do that? The idea made you want to recoil in disgust. Ew. The only good thing about breakfast was the food. They were specially prepared by the chef and his team. Not once have you ever had to step foot into the kitchen to make your own meal. Butlers came to the table to set down dishes originating from Europe. Your palette was used to foreign foods than most people. This was just your normal.

Poking at your plate, you were wondering how you were going to go about this. Father was at the head of the table and your dear brother was sitting by his side. You sat far away from them, opposite of father. It was hard even calling them your family. Just staring at your brother made you lose your appetite. He was on his phone, pretending to look busy and keep up with father's work in the hotel business. He was going to be taking father's place when the old man retires after all. Your brother, Kyunghwan is three years older than you. For now. You're twenty but his birthday was coming up and soon he would be four years older. He definitely didn't know when your birthday was.

Kyunghwan was in his own world. He didn't acknowledge any of the staff around him. In his eyes, his drink was refilled automatically. He probably didn't know orange juice came from a fruit. Was it because he was spoiled rich or stupid? You loved to think it was both. You were spoiled too, but...it was different. Honestly, you were different from your family in a lot of ways. They've always known it though now it was time to point it out. You suppose it was better to come out with it rather than to keep delaying your little secret. A secret that just might get you in extreme trouble, but were you going to care? No.

"Abeoji, can I have your attention for just a moment?" You set down your glass of orange juice. Father looked up from the papers he was reading. He looked annoyed that you decided to speak and your brother copied his look. Kyunghwan must have been extremely confused. No one speaks during meals in this household.

"What is it?" Father's gaze felt like a glare. His eyes have never been sympathetic, so you were accustomed to this stare. Frankly, it would be odd if your father behaved sweetly towards you.

"I just wanted to announce that today is my first day of..." You happily tapped the table. You had to build some excitement here! The butlers and maids were staring at you like you were ill. Brother dearest couldn't comprehend what you were doing just as father's expression grew agitated. "First day of college!" You announced, throwing your arms up in the air.

Okay, no one was clapping and smiling like you expected. It was still incredibly disappointing. You didn't really have time to be sad over that though. Now with that news out in the air, you had to prepare yourself for what father and Kyunghwan had to say. You've actually been preparing for months now. No, you've been thinking about this exact moment over for an entire year. After you graduated high school, it took you about a week to make your final decision about your future. An entire year of secret work has led up to this.

"College?" Father's gaze hardened. He didn't even blink as he leaned back in his seat. You were waiting for it. "Princess." There it is. "What is this nonsense I'm hearing? You don't need to go to college. How is that going to serve you?"

"In many ways, Abeoji. Most importantly, it's because I want too—" You spoke only to be interrupted by your brother.

"What are you even trying to prove?" Kyunghwan scoffed. "What are you even going for? You don't need it."

"I do need it because I'm going to be a fashion designer. I major in fashion design." You smiled, keeping your head up.

A lot of your smiles used to be fake. They were mastered along with the way you carried yourself in front of others. Hardly any of it was real. However, you had reality slap you hard in the face when Yewon decided to act like a b*tch the day before graduation. Whatever her intention was with that, you've changed after that experience. You decided it wasn't worth going along with what everyone else wanted for you. It's about time that you make your own decisions like you've always dreamed of. Something so simple, you craved.
