"Hey," He said casually, stepping inside the house and taking his hands out of his pocket.
"Hi," I replied, returning a smile but on the inside, my heart pounded against my chest. I don't know why I was so nervous. I wasn't doing anything wrong. Kenma and I were friends. And even if we were more than that, so what? I didn't owe anyone else any loyalty.
Cough.
"So, is your mom not home or something?" Kenma asked as we walked back together towards the kitchen.
I shook my head, "She's been so busy with work these days.
Kenma let out a soft whistle, "Even on the weekend? That's crazy."
"Yeah.." I let out a light laugh, not knowing what else to say or do.
A silence passed between us before I finally spoke up again, "Kenma, I-"
"Yeah, I know," Kenma cut me off, tilting his head slightly as he looked at me, "It was rude of me to just, um, you know.. kiss you like that yesterday. And unfair. You'd just had a fight with Kuroo and I took advantage of that, I'm sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?" I tried for a smile, "What happened between me and Kuroo yesterday wasn't your fault. He was being a jerk and... well.."
Kenma's eyes flashed with hope, "So does that mean...?"
"Kenma I don't... I don't know..." I was being honest. Despite our fight I couldn't get my mind off Kuroo. And I hated that.
Kenma's face dropped for a moment before taking a deep breathe and grabbing my hand, "Okay, then. Just let me know."
I nodded, taking a breathe as well, "Yeah. I just need time to process." I was relieved at how well he was taking it.
"Okay then... um... I guess I should go, right?" Kenma dropped my hand.
"You don't have to," I looked at him, "I could use the compant. We could... have a movie night or something. As friends. Remember when we used to do it back at your house when we were younger?"
Kenma smiled, "Yeah, I do. I'd always invite Kuroo and then spend the rest of the night listening to you two argue over what movie to watch."
"His pick would always win," I grumbled, "Because YOU always sided with him." I pointed at Kenma.
He shrugged, "Sorry?"
We both looked at each other and laughed, "Come on, lets go into the living room."
I turned on the TV and we looked through the movies together, finally selecting one and putting it on. It was a good movie, but halfway through, the doorbell rang.
"Were you expecting someone?" Kenma asked me.
I shook my head, "No, I'll go see who it is."
"Alright. I'll pause the movie."
Thanking him, I got up and head to my door and pulled it open.
"Hey-"
My sentence stopped in my tracks as I looked up at Kuroo with his signature messy hair and an oversized hoodie. He had jeans and running shoes on, and his phone was in his hand.
"Hey," He replied, trying for a grin as he looked me up and down. My heart skipped a beat.
"Kuroo, what are you doing here?" I asked, my tone darkening. I don't know why, but I really didn't want him to find out Kenma was here. My brain suddenly filled with dread.
"Well after our fight... you wouldn't respond to my texts or pick up my calls, so I got worried. Decided to come see what was up with that. "
"I blocked you," I told him in the most uninterested voice I could muster up.
"You- what? Why?"
Making a face at him, I said, "You really have to ask why?"
Kuroo sighed, "Fuck. I fucked up, y/n can we talk-"
"Y/n?" Kuroo's sentence was cut off by Kenma's voice as I heard his footsteps coming closer, my heart sinking, "Who is it? Why are you taking so long-"
Kenma walked up next to me and froze when he saw Kuroo. Kuroo's hands dropped to the side as the two of them stared at each other in silence.
"Shit..." I thought to myself, not knowing what to do.
Finally, Kuroo cleared his throat, "Oh. I see you're already busy right now.
"No, I-"
But to my surprise, it was Kenma who spoke up, "Yeah, she is."
Kuroo looked at him and furrowed his eyebrows together, "You told me you didn't like her. I told you how I felt and you... you..."
"I lied because I knew you, well, that you two had a thing going on. But you were an asshole to her."
"I know, and I was just about to apologize before..." Kuroo stepped forward angrily. Him and Kenma looked each other in the eyes, the anger and tension in the room intense.
"Kuroo," I looked at him with pleading eyes, hoping he wouldn't start something.
He looked at me for a good minute before straightening up and shoving his hands in his pocket.
"Whatever," He mumbled, stepping out of the house and slamming the door shut. I wanted to go after him. But I couldn't. Not after the way Kenma had just defended me. Instead, I held in the tears I felt forming and followed Kenma back into the room to finish our movie.
