"Cause when you said jump I said how high
But when I jumped you said goodbye"

Elvira

"What about the time you used to be a delinquent, and the principle called home?" Naomi spoke through her own cheerful tears and laughter, the melody of her cackles brought a smile to my lip. There had always been something so healing about hearing her laugh, some strange sort of comfort. Aurora sat beside her, laughing with her arm draped over Naomi's shoulder while the other poured sake into her mouth.  "Instead of your mom your grandma picked up, and when she heard that you had been caught smoking-"

"Naomi please!" I pleaded with the girl, slamming a drunken fist against the table. It wasn't exactly that I had a problem with Aurora knowing but rather Marco knowing, who sat behind our table at the bar.

After a sip of Aurora's sake she continued. "She came to school, Aurora. Oh my god I have never seen Elvira so scared, and we've been through some shit. I mean she went pale." Chuckles came from behind our table, the men finding humor in the story. It was either that, or they found humor in just how lightweight Naomi was. "Miss Valentina came inside the school during lunch and chased Elvira around with her sandal, screaming at her in Spanish as she did." The laughter grew. "And when she caught her? She bent Elvira over her knee and pulled down her skirt. Then proceeded to SPANK her! Bare ass and all, in front of everyone." Aurora held her empty bottle of sake in the air to signal to Aisha that she needed a new glass, clanks came from behind not even seconds of her doing so. "That was the first time I had seen Elvira cry, and the last time she did in public."

"I hate you, I should have never allowed you to stay here. Marco can't you send her home?" I gripped the back of my chair, using it to twist my spine so that I faced Marco. "Why is she even still here? You promised to send her home today." My mother had already left on her flight, yet there sat Naomi. Still here.

"Now Now my love, she is no longer my problem. She's Aurora's guest after all, it wouldn't be right for me to kick her out when she isn't bothering me. Though if it bothers you so much, I'd be happy to get us our own little house. One with plenty of rooms for nursery's." He stood from his bar stool, moving to me as he spoke. His hands rested atop of my shoulders, turning my body back to face Naomi. "Plenty of room for plenty of children."

Naomi sat down her glass with a hiccup, frowning at his statement. "What do you mean? Elvira is infertile, she can't have any children." The room that was once full of so much laughter had fallen completely silent, Marco's hand grew tighter around my shoulders.

I found myself unable to speak. Sure, she was more drunk than the high school freshman at the college fraternity party.. but that wasn't an excuse to say something so personal. "What?" Marco questioned, doubting his own ears. "Elvira, you can't have children?"

"He didn't.." Naomi's eyes searched my own, no doubt reading the fury that had been soaring through them. The clank of the sake bottle hitting the table broke our contact, her eyes moving to look a Aisha. "I'm so sorry Elvira, I thought he would have known."

"Why didn't you mention this to me?" His grip hadn't lessened nor tightened, it almost felt distant now. "Answer me!" This time his voice was sharp, though it didn't lack sympathy completely.
