Dressing modern vintage is basically combining vintage-type clothing with high-street clothing. Collared shirts, bold print, and high waisted pants are some of the things that make this modern look vintage-like. Let's see how you can do this!

1
Try more plain white or colorful printed blouses. A plain white-cotton blouse is an essential piece to a modern vintage wardrobe. By contrast, blouses with loud prints make great vintage statement pieces, but only if you have enough plain modern clothing to tone the prints down.

    • Layer simple white vintage blouses with colorful modern cardigans, or take that bold vintage print and tone it down with a solid-colored jacket.

2
Choose high-waist bottoms. High-waist pants add a vintage signature to any outfit, and can be paired with just about any modern top.

   • Pair high-waist shorts or pants with a simple white collared blouse, sandals and geometric necklaces or earrings to create a casual, effortless look.

3
Blending items from the decades is key. Don't just stick to one time, because that will limit your options. Putting items from different decades together will help your vintage pieces look current.

   • Pair that high waist swing skirt with a casual t-shirt and accesories to match, and voila! You have a great look that combines vintage and modern.

   • Add a vintage denim jacket over a sleek white shirt or pair a 70s-style belt with your pants for a refreshing twist.

Try layering contrasting vintage items to modernize them. Vintage formal attire can often include loud or multicolored prints, so try pairing those pieces with modern casual pieces to help tone the outfit down.

   • A collared blouse, over-sized vintage sweater, and add a pair dark wash jeans or skirt, and now you have a modern vintage effortless day-look.

5
Play up the wartime silhouette. As women's skirts and dresses became shorter to save on fabric, legs emerged as the most noted and desirable feature of the early-1940s figure.Additionally, as men and women's clothing adhered to slim cuts throughout the body, shoulder pads became popular for both genders as a way to add interest to the silhouette.

   • Look for blouses with long and flowy "bubble" sleeves. Gauzy fabrics are great, too.

   • Wear a simple chiffon baby-doll dress with spaghetti-straps for a feminine look.

Try experiment with the 70's hairstyles. The main hairstyles of the 1970s were feathered, shaggy or long with a center part.

   • If you have layers in your hair, spray it with dry shampoo to get volume and texture, then add a texturizing pomade to define your layers.

   • For those with long hair, simply part it down the middle and let it hang loose and free. Then, add a little product to make it shine.

7
Create the 80's makeup look. You should apply eyeshadow with a heavy hand. Bright, neon colors work just as well as dark, gothic colors.

   • For real life makeup and hairstyle references, look up pictures of icons like Madonna and Kelly Preston.

Look for vintage clothing at your local thrift store. Thrift stores are great places to find vintage clothing at a bargain price. You may have to sift through dozens of piles, but if you find that golden item without emptying your wallet, it will be well worth the effort.

   • If you are having trouble finding vintage pieces that you like, then try to also look at the vintage clothing from a DIY perspective. Just because a vintage dress or shirt is oversized or shapeless doesn't mean you can't get creative and pair the item with a modern belt, or trim the item to fit your size and taste.
