I didn't see him for the rest of the day, either, which was strange considering I went up to his usual table during lunch, but he wasn't there. His friends told me they had just seen him, but he wasn't there now.
It was like he was avoiding me on purpose.
After school finally ended, I rushed over to the gym, where I knew he'd be because we had volleyball practice. He'd never miss it.
The gym was still empty for the most part because the other team members were probably still packing up from classes. Even coach wasn't here yet.
Luckily for me, though, Kuroo was the only one there, bringing out the volleyballs from the storage closet for practice.
He noticed me standing there, his face turning blank as if he'd seen a ghost, hands dropping to the side.
I walked towards him in fake confidence, but his reaction was enough to convince me of what I'd been in fear of all day.
"You've been avoiding me, haven't you?" I gave Kuroo an unimpressed look, crossing my arms over my chest.
Kuroo looked at me and sighed, running a hand through his hair, "No point in denying it, I guess."
"Is this about yesterday?" I said, a hint of anger dripping from my voice, "Because last time I checked, it was you who kissed me first.
Kuroo's eyes flashed for a moment before speaking again, "Yeah, I know. Look, y/n... I don't really know what came over me yesterday. I was just... bored."
"Liar."
Kuroo met my eyes for a minute, standing his ground for a whole ten seconds before letting out another sigh.
"Fine," He looked down, "You caught me. I just didn't want to... I don't know, really. Have this conversation with you, I guess."
"What conversation?" My face was stern. I didn't have time to deal with his bullshit.
"You haven't been at Nekoma that long, but you don't live under a rock. You've heard about me... well, I guess I'm just the kind of person who casually hooks up with girls and then... well, ignores them I guess. I haven't been in many actual relationships."
"Who said anything about a relationship?" I asked him, raising an eyebrow, but my tone softened for some reason.
And then I sighed, "Look, I really don't care. Whatever it is, just tell me, okay? You don't have to ignore me."
Kuroo picked up a volleyball and tossed it in the air, "Right. I know that."
"But...?"
"There's no but."
"I think there is."
Kuroo let out an amused groan, "You know me better than you let on, y/n."
"Shut up and get to the point, Kuroo."
Kuroo held the volleyball under his arm, "Well... I guess this..." He motioned between the two of us, "... is really different to me. Your mom was right yesterday, we fought all the time. But then yesterday, we were kissing and... well, I guess I'm just confused is all."
It was like he took the words right out of my mouth.
"So... what now? You want me to just... forget about it?" I asked him, a little hurt.
"No..." Kuroo looked into the distance, as if deep in thought, "I don't want to forget. What if we just started over as... friends?"
"Let me guess, with benefits?" I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes.
