"You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness"- Jonathan Safran Foer

Melody🤍

Melody entered her house with a sigh. The school week was long but went better than expected. She got along with most of her classmates and even made some friends.

She put her bag down and got ready for a shower. The girl decided to put on some music because it was too quiet. Melodys' father was never in the picture, and she was stable enough to be emancipated. He even helped her with the process. Her mom had lots of savings and set her up well. Melody also had a pretty good job.

Melody took her shower and ordered pizza while doing stuff around the house. She hadn't had pizza in a while, and she was excited. Since she lived alone, there wasn't much to do.

The only thing is that it got dusty sometimes. Melody lived in a basic house with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. She moved in during her Junior year thanks to her father. Even though she moved neighborhoods, she didn't want to switch schools until a new year started. She had a few friends from her old school, but not anyone too noteworthy. There was one closer friend, but they were almost always long-distance anyways.

Melody decided to start homework, but that didn't last long when her phone started ringing. To her surprise, it was Hazel. She decided to answer. They exchanged numbers so they could discuss their art project.

"Hazel?" the brown-skinned girl answered.

"Hey Melody, what are you doing? I'm bored." Melody chuckled a bit before answering.

"I'm just completing-" the doorbell rang.

"Hold on, that's my pizza," Melody told Hazel before she put her phone down.

Melody retrieved her pizza and started to hear yelling coming from her phone.

"Melody, come back. What kind of pizza is it?" she laughed and grabbed her phone. This was the most emotion she had ever heard from Hazel.

"I'm right here. It's just regular cheese, she replied

"I'm coming. Wait for me!"

"Okay, but you don't know my address,"

"Text me."

"K"

Not long after, she heard the doorbell. After checking who it was, she opened the door. Standing there, Hazel was wearing black sweats and a spaghetti strap tank top, holding various bags of snacks.

"You look ready to sleep," Melody chuckled, looking at her outfit.

"Damn right." Hazel laughed with her. Melody was wearing gray biker shorts with an oversized t-shirt. They went to the living room and started preparing to watch something. Hazel brought chips and candy and emptied them into giant bowls. When they were done, they got blankets and pizza.

"Oh... and can I stay over?" Hazel asked. Melody never had a friend over, and she was lonely living alone.

"Yeah, sure," Mel answered. Right after, Hazel left for her car and returned with a change of clothes.

"What were you gonna do if she said no?"

"Go home and unpack my bag," they both started laughing. "But are you sure? I wouldn't want you to get in trouble with your mom?"

"Uhhh... it's no problem," she felt terrible for lying, but what was she supposed to say, 'oh, she's dead, so I don't think her opinion really matters.'

Melody wasn't used to having someone in her house. But she knew her mom would be proud of her for making friends.

"So, what do you wanna watch?" Hazel asked as we were getting everything ready.

"Uh, I don't know. Do you like any specific genres?" Melody asked, grabbing a bowl of chips

"Ummm, I love horror and hate romance. Those are always terrible as movies." Haze; fake gagged, causing Mel to crack up.

"I don't know about horror, but I don't like romance either. Unless it's a book." she wrinkled her nose, sitting down. Hazel sat down next to her.

"How about comedy or an animated show," she suggested grabbing a bowl.

"I'll take the latter," Mel agreed to grab a slice of pizza.

After the movie, they talked for a bit before moving on to the next one.

"Do you have any siblings?" Melody asked

"Yea, I'm the oldest with two younger brothers. Harlow is a freshman and Clay is in middle school. How about you?"

"Nope, I'm an only child," Melody sighed

"Shit, you can have one of her brothers," Hazel proposed making me laugh

"You know what?" she continued. "We should hang out at the plaza by our school,"

"The one with the fountain and the theatre?" Hazel nodded her head. "We drove passed it moving here, but she has never been."

Mel never really started exploring this town until summer. Before that, she just kept to her old neighborhood. She never really went out her junior year anyways.

Melody woke up with half a slice of pizza on her face and someone's body part by her ear. She noticed that the body part was Hazel's leg. Mel carefully slid down the couch, making she wasn't kneed in the head. Once she successfully got up, Mel took Hazel's face out of her bowl and attempted to wake her up.

"Hazel, Hazel wakes up." she gently shook her arm. The Asian girl stirred around before slightly opening her eyes.

"What year is it?" she turned around half-awake. Mel resisted the urge to laugh.

"It's time to go to bed it's already 3 am." After having to explain that they were, in fact, on earth, the girls cleaned up and headed to Meoldys' room.

They both slept in her room since the guest room kind of sort of had her art things all over it. It wasn't a mess, but there was paint stacked up in a corner and canvases on the bed... ok, it's a bit of a mess.
