The only one! - Newt

Chapter twenty-three

Aris gets to me and I follow him, everyone is sleeping but we crawl through the vent. "Wait here, I'll be back with the morons!" He says. After a while he is back with the boys and we get out.

"We need to safe Teresa!" Thomas says and climbs out of the vent. We run through the hallways when we bump into the woman that brainwashed me. Newt immediately stands in front of me.

"Wait what are you guys..." the woman gets interrupted by Thomas who holds a gun to her.

"You come with us, where is Teresa?" Thomas asks. We follow the woman's directions and walk inside a room with more people. Thomas points his gun to them and they shift to the wall.

"Don't let this girl escape!" A man says pointing to me. He goes to grab my arm but Newt grabbed his first.

"Look shank, don't you think you ruined it enough already? So stay away from her or I will break all your bones!" Newt says angrily. The man nods scared and Newt loses him and takes my hand pulling me with him. We get through the room and run over the hallways.

"Open that stupid door!" Minho says while trying.

"Quick their coming!" I scream as I see Jansen walking up to us with some soldiers.

"I think you guys have something that belongs to us! Hunter! Come here, we only want to protect you from these beasts." Jansen says.

Thomas walks up to him with his gun pointed at them. "Don't you dare touch her again." He says.

The door opens and we step outside. "Close the door!" Jansen says in his watch. The door starts closing from the top. We scream for Thomas to get through. He runs and slides underneath right in time. We run outside to get in a desert.

"Come on quick." Newt says while grabbing my hand. We climb up the sandy mountain and see the soldiers of the building getting out too but it's too dark for them to see us.

"Here!" Teresa screams and gets inside a building under the sand. We follow her and Winston gets flashlights from his backpack.

"Stay with me okay?" Newt asks almost desperate and at this point I've been starting to believe him. I nod and follow him. We take a look around the messy building.

All of a sudden cranks show up, deceased by the flame and Newt pulls me away right i time. "Run!" Minho screams. I follow Newt to upstairs. At some point a crank attacks him and lands on top of Newt.

"No!" I scream, taking a chair and smacking the crank off of Newt. I help him get up and he smiles at me. We run further and come in a closed area.

"Oh no! I don't wanna die like this!" Winston says. Thomas bunks to a door but it won't open.

"Move!" Frypan screams and bumps the door in right on time. We get inside and pull things in front of the door so it stays closed. We finally get under a little roof away from the cranks to hide and it works.

"What do we do now?" Thomas asks breathing heavy from all the running.

"Sleeping here and see tomorrow! I'm exhausted." Frypan replies.

I fall asleep quickly once I lay down. At some point in the night I wake up but keep pretending like I sleep. I hear the others talking.

"I just wish she'd remember." Newt sighs and he strokes a bit of hair from my face. The others probably go sleeping but I can hear Newt still talking.

"Remember the words you told me? 'Love you till the day I die' surrender my everything cause you made me believe you're mine. Yeah you used to call me baby, now you're calling me by name. I fell for you and you fell for me. We laughed about Chuck's stupid jokes and talked for hours. We cuddles and kissed when no one watched. I felt safe and I did this to you. I should've been there." He says softly.

I can hear he cries. I slowly open my eyes and see him turned his back to me. I sit up and place my hand on his shoulder. He startles and looks at me. Tears in his eyes, their red from crying so much. "Did you hear all of that?" He asks and I nod honestly. He wipes his tears which is no use since it makes place for new ones. "Sorry." He whispers.

I place my hand on his cheek and wipe some tears away with my thumb. I turn his head slightly more my way, well what is there to lose anyway? I reach and kiss him softly. His soft touch against my lips make my body shiver. He places his hand on my hips and pulls me closer.

The sun slowly goes down and the runners return. "Hey, about before. Can we just forget about the fact that I may or may not like you?" He asks.

"Why?" I ask back a little disappointed.

"Because I don't want to embarrass myself, I don't want to ruin our friendship because you know I like you." He replies. Oh now it falls in place.

"No, I don't want to forget that." I say.

"Why not?" He asks really sad all of a sudden.

"Because then I wouldn't get the chance to do this." I reply. It's now or never anyway. I lean in and kiss him softly on the lips. He places his hand on my cheek and pulls me onto his lap. We both pull away after a while for air.

"Look Newt it's a butterfly and it looks wonderful." I say pointing to a beautiful yellow butterfly.

"Not as wonderful as you Sunshine, give me a nickname I'm sick of hearing Newt all the time." He says smiling.

I laugh and nod. "Okay baby come on!" I reply. His face brightens up immediately and he picks me up.

"Yay I'm you're baby!" He says happily. I start laughing more.

"You okay luv?" Newt asks. We both lay in the grass field staring at the sky.

"Yeah of course!" I reply. He pulls me closer and I rest my head on his chest.

I pull away from the kiss and see everyone staring at us. "Newt!" I say softly looking at him. His cheeks are red and I bet mine are too.

"For the record, she kissed me! I didn't push her to do it!" Newt defends himself against the others.

"Newt!" I say louder smiling at him. "I remember!" I say. His eyes widen just like everyone else.

"What do you remember?" He asks slowly.

"You! The glade! Gally and Chuck and Aaron, Jeff, Clint! I remember the butterfly and the first kiss." I say happily. A huge grin appears on Newt's face and he embraces me.

Finally the safe feeling is back, the feeling of safety I always feel when he holds me. Everyone smiles and Newt loses his grip. "I'm sorry! I should've been there." He starts but I interrupt him.

"It's okay Newt, I remember." I say smiling happily.

"Let's get back to sleep shall we? It's still midnight." Thomas says while laying down. Newt puts his arm around me and just as in the glade I lay my head on his chest.
