Chapter twenty-two

Newt POV

I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking about today. It was a mistake, I should've been there and I wasn't. I wanted to hold her close, kiss her forehead, hug her after her panic attack but I couldn't. I couldn't even tell her that I was her boyfriend, that I was supposed to take care of her. I shouldn't have told her that it was gonna be okay. "Newt you're awake?" Thomas asks from beneath my bed. He sleeps under in the bunk bed.

"Mhm." Is the only sound I could make.

"She will be fine Newt, don't worry about it." Thomas replies softly as to not wake the others.

"No! The last time I told someone that everything was gonna be ok, she got brainwashed! I want Hunter back okay? The loveliest, sweetest person ever!" I say loudly but to my surprise I didn't wake the others.

"Well figure something out, we need to escape tomorrow." Thomas replies.

It's early and I've only slept for maybe two hours but that's fine. I walk into the cafeteria where I see Aris and Hunter sit at another table to not make them suspicious in front of the guard. Is Aris gonna make a move on my girlfriend? Does he like her? Does she like him? Random thoughts fill my head and it hurts.

I sit down and sigh deeply staring in front of me. "Chill Newt she will be totally fine." Minho says. Yeah it's driving me crazy! People telling me she will be fine while I'm sitting here useless.

Hunter POV

"So I think that Newt has been your boyfriend when you arrived, he seems really overprotective." Aris says. I turn around and look Newt in the eyes. He is sad and I feel guilty. I turn back to Aris.

"I feel bad for not remembering. I wish I could just remember everything but I don't." I say a little frustrated. After all, Aris is the only one I trust.

"You make me think of this girl I was in a maze with. Her name was Sonya, had blonde hair and she was my everything but they took her away to who knows where." Aris explains.

"Guess these people love hurting the feelings of others." I say while leaning backwards in my chair.

"Don't worry, tonight we'll get out of here, I promise." Aris explains.

"Aris can you keep a secret?" He nods. "Yesterday when I had my panic attack and Newt held my wrists I had this sort of flashback to before. It had happened before and I remembered a little." I say.

"Well shy didn't you tell us, that may be the answer." Aris says happily. "Ok in an hour I come to your room and we are getting you're memories back!" He says and I nod.

I get back in my room and wait for Aris to come. I follow him and get to the boys room again. "So tell me what you told me Hunter." Aris says happily while the boys look at me confused.

"Well yesterday when Newt held my wrists for calming me down, I had this flashback, like it had happened before." I reply.

"So what do we do with that?" Minho asks. "Did it happen before?" Everyone looks at Newt.

"Day one, she came up in the box and everyone left, she just looked around and started panicking so I helped her." Newt explains softly still sad.

"So maybe if we do things or tell things that happened we get her memory back." Aris replies.

"But that is gonna take ages! We don't have the time." Frypan says.

"We can do some memories, start!" Thomas says.

"Okay, remember you're first job in the glade? You cooked with me and the happiness on your face after your first sandwich after I already had six?" Frypan asks but I don't remember it so I shake my head.

"Remember the moment you first got your period and everyone thought you were dying so Newt and I wanted to drag you to Jeff and Clint?" Minho asks. Again I shake my head.

"This is not working guys." Winston says.

"Well then we have to deal with the fact that it's gonna take longer." Aris replies.

"What if she never remembers?" Newt asks.

"I don't know." Winston says.

"Come on we gotta get you back before they notice you aren't in your room no more." Aris says climbing into the vent.

"See you tonight Hunter." Frypan says and I follow Aris once again. When we arrive he smiles at me.

"So tonight I come to you, then we get to the boys and escape." He says quickly. I nod and he leaves. Man I wish I remembered those things.
