"can you hurry the hell up?" aera hissed at her younger brother, who fumbled with the keys, a tension born of the looming risk of being caught seeping through every awkward moment. "you're going to get us caught."

jisung's widened eyes were met with a sudden action as his sister snatched the keys from his trembling hand, hastily slotting them into the keyhole.

with cautious precision, aera turned the key, easing the door open with a practiced stealth that bordered on expertise. the two siblings nudged each other through the entrance, fully aware that getting caught would be game over.

it was the dead of night, the clock striking 3 a.m.

jisung fought back a startled scream when aera inadvertently stepped on his toe, a momentary speed bump in their silent ascent up the stairs.

however, neither of them foresaw the sudden illumination of the lights or the stern countenances of their parents, seated on the living room sofa, their expressions a testament to their unspoken disapproval.

"where have you two been?" their father inquired, his voice betraying a hint of sternness.

aera composed herself, flashing her most disarming smile before responding, "a study session."

a quirked eyebrow from their father underscored his skepticism, unconvinced by his daughter's fumbled excuse. "neither of you is in the same class," he pointed out, his gaze now fixed on jisung. "and you reek of alcohol."

jisung's bashful glance downward, coupled with a stuttered apology, betrayed his guilt. "sorry, dad," he managed, a fleeting moment of regret coloring his expression before he gathered himself.

"jihoon," their mother intervened, her hand gently resting on her husband's shoulder in a placating gesture. "they're just being college kids."

mr. park shot his wife a reproachful glance, internally weighing the merits of challenging her. yet, the prospect of a night spent on the couch deterred him from arguing further, conceding defeat with a resigned sigh.

"did my babies have anything to eat?" their mother cooed, her tone tender. "and don't say 'edibles.'"

jisung groaned, exasperation lacing his tone. "mom, why would we eat ebidles? we had dcdonald's on the way here."

aera rolled her eyes at her brother's inebriated state. "edibles, mcdonald's," she corrected with a tinge of exasperation. "and it wasn't even mickey d's, it was taco bell."

"oh, oops."

"anyway," aera exhaled, brushing off the conversation. "we're tired. good night!"

with that, she seized jisung's hand, guiding him upstairs, grappling with his sudden tendency to sprawl on the stairs and refuse to budge.

"why's he built like a stick but weighs like a whole tree?" she inwardly lamented.

as the kids made their way upstairs, mr. and mrs. park delved into their own conversation.

"aerin, don't you think you were being a little too lenient?" jihoon questioned his wife.

as a father of two college-going kids, he was aware of the potential for recklessness. however, his role demanded a semblance of discipline, a line he struggled to tread, considering his own collegiate exploits. yet, he understood the need for guidance.

aerin's hand atop jihoon's evoked a gentle chuckle. "you're so protective!" she teased, playfully patting his leg. "i remember back in college, you were always so protective of me. i just knew you'd be even more so with our kids."

jihoon reminisced, a fond smile gracing his lips. "you were the most gorgeous girl on campus. i had to make sure no one else would steal you away."

aerin reciprocated his smile. "i knew you'd be the stricter one, so i had to balance it out."

"hey, i am nice!" jihoon protested. "i just don't want our kids to stray off course."

"i know, i know," aerin consoled. "but jisung and aera are good kids. they even called an uber to take them home."

"aerin?"

"jihoon?"

"i love you."

"i love you too."
