As the dark night snuffed out the sun, the firelights of London city were a light; magic descended upon Kensington gardens like once before.
It has been a long time since Wendy was 13, orchestrating fairy tales while having her adventures in Neverland with Peter Pan. Chasing pirates and celebrating with Indians and who could forget The all so merry mermaids. However, since then not a night has gone by where she has not taken a moment to look out her window to the second start to the right, letting her self-reminisce in her wonderful memories of her youth, of him and how wonderful he was. Sometimes she will let the regret of not staying slip in however quickly disregards it as for what could she do now, she was all grown up. A woman to be brought into high society and married off to the most eligible bachelor that would have her.
Tonight, would be her first taste of being a woman in high society. She sat at her red oak dressing table, letting her soft hands run across the expensive varnish. She looked at her graceful reflection as she placed two diamond earrings into her ears that her mother had loaned her for the special event. She checks were coasted in pink powered and ever imperfection was fixed with the illusion of powder and lipstick. Her hair was pinned up and back out of her face to show off her features to suitable suiters, not a curl would dare drop. She sprays herself with sweet, scented perfume, before walking to the full-length mirror to take in her full reflection. She looked at her white gown and how the beading would twinkle in the light like pixie dust. she took one last look at herself before presenting herself to her family.
As she walked into the room all heads turned.
"My God Wendy, you look like beauty itself" John spoke to her as he stood up.
Wendy's mother Mary smiled with admiration for her daughter. "My Beautiful girl is now a woman" she says with a hit of sadness as she watches her daughter become a women.
"she is a fine young Women; she will do well tonight." Her father praises her.
Wendy smiles in responses as there is not much for her to say these days. A Lady does not speak improperly, inaccurately, opinionatedly or in her case at all. As Wendy grew older and was taught how to be a 'proper lady', she soon came to realise her ideas of being a writer, her opinions regarding political affairs or her contribution to a conversation with men and women was not required or appreciated. A young women's job in high society was to be a Lady, the pride and joy of a family and its reputation. She was to tend to the house, to the children but not in place of a nanny, she was to host lunches and tea parties and to attend balls and to always look her best. To be an image of perfection, not one curl out of place.
"her you go my dear don't want you getting a chill" her father said as he passed her, her shall.
"thank you, father." She thanked with a kind smile.
Wendy steppe out into the cold winter London street and tightly wrapped her shall around herself as she scuttled to the car waiting for them. she waved out the car window to Michael and John who stood afoot on the door steep as they drove away.
"how do you feel my dear?" her mother asked her with a reassuring sweet smile.
Wendy smiled "a little nervous" she replied candidly.
"I was too for my first Ball, but its so exciting once you get there, all the dancing and the music, its all so uplifting and it lets suiters see you and who you are." Her mother said with a hint of mischief.
Wendy smiled to her mother; however, someone already had her heart and always will however young they were, for as she grow older so did her fondness for him.
Back at the house John was in charge and was looking after his younger brother Michael.
