I turned away because he was right.

"Why does this bother you, Mr. Cyrio?" Dr. Armiallo asked.

"I know what you're doing." Dawaen said as he pointed at her in the rearview mirror. "But to answer the question, why would I put myself and these kids through all that torture? If we don't get attached to each other, then when they go back to the King and Queen, it won't be such a sad thing. They won't know enough about me to be upset and they will go to their real parents. They will forget about me and I get to go back to my old life. Lesson learned and everyone gets what they want; everyone wins."

"Does everyone truly win though?" Dr. Armiallo asked. "Why would you think that everyone wins? You and Kasai have mentioned plenty of times how the King is crazy and very, very cruel. Does that not reflect your own situation? Would you really want your children susceptible to the plight that you have lived with? An abusive father who cares little or nothing about you, hurts you in more ways than one, and has made you think of yourself as pointless? Or is it that because you have lived with it that you think you might end up like your own father? If that is the case, then who would be winning?"

Dawaen turned and crossed his arms over his stomach. "My father isn't a father, he's a sack of shit with a human skin who happened to procreate that one time. Even though the King is a dick, at least he wanted kids."

"The King is just like your father, but with power." I said softly. "Even the children who weren't made from humans can see that. There is a full Elbaskin child up there, her name is Tereina... She wasn't born of any human, no help whatsoever, and yet she would love to meet Max because she can see how much of an asshole the King is. I wouldn't sell yourself short, Mr. Cyrio."

"Easy for you to say. Max is god's gift to parenthood. Who would have known that emo dweeb would be the greatest dad in the world?"

"Does that make you made?" Kole asked.

"You shut up. I don't want to hear anything from you. If not for you, neither of us would be here."

"As much as Mr. Sprint's fascinating obsession with Mr. Holt is, unfortunately, he didn't make you do anything." Dr. Armiallo said.

"Like hell he didn't!" Dawaen yelled back.

"Due to your own lack of self-worth and confidence -plus a secret need for companionship and friendship- you sacrificed your virtues to get out of being hurt for just a little more and put it all into the hopes of finding someone like Mars. Your goals were actually the same with a small twist. Kole wanted to find someone like Mars and so did you. Mars seems to be an extremely good friend; who wouldn't want someone like him? But yours, Mr. Cyrio, also stems from the jealousy of Mr. Taylor's supportive environment not only from his parents but pinpointedly his father, best friend, and the girl who you wanted to be your girlfriend. You were alone and desperate and Mr. Sprint filled that need."

"Screw you." Dr. Armiallo smirked at me and I smiled too. "Whatever you want to psychologically pull from the situation, the thought is still the same."

"Are you afraid that they won't love you?" I asked.

He didn't say anything and when I looked back at him, he was looking out the window, but I could tell the question bothered him.

"I'm not a good person. Whether by environment or not. I'm just... not. I wouldn't want them to know someone like me."

"Why not?" Kole said. "What you said isn't true: you're the nicest guy I know."

"What do you know? You barely know yourself."

"You don't have to have a good memory to feel how a person is. Kasai knows Max and he's never met him, so how is that any different?"

"It's very different." Dr. Armiallo said. "But the sentiment is cute. Enough about that though. I guess the question is how is Kasai going to convince the Taylors to let us inside so that we can show them what's on that thumb drive?"

"Yeah, that's my question." I said. "I really kind of only saw them once but it was fleeting and I was a baby... a real one anyway. It was two years ago and I should be about two and half feet tall, not almost six foot."

"You're almost six foot?" Kole asked.

"I think so?"

"Lucky..."

"Well, David must believe that you'll be able to convince them somehow or he wouldn't have put you up to the task."

"But if Max couldn't do it, then what makes you thinks Kasai can?"

"David always discouraged Max from trying to convince his parents because he knew it wouldn't work. He's a pretty good judge of character in that regard. He wouldn't ask you to do it if he didn't think you could. Whatever the reason, he believes that you are the one that can do it."

I sighed. This is going to be impossible.
