It didn't take the team forty-five minutes, it took them a whole hour to get to Lafayette park where Spencer remained a shaking, crying mess. He didn't care in the slightest about the strange looks the passersby were giving him, he'd lost the most important thing in the world to him... again.
It's like he just kept losing. No matter how much he cared for others, nothing good ever happened to him. And when it did, he lost it the second he got it. Not this time, though. This time he was going to get you back.
After an hour – that felt like a year to Spencer – of impatiently waiting, the team arrived in two SUVs. They jumped out to meet up with Spencer who was now on the ground with his head in his knees, leaning against the railing that borders the park.
Emily bent down and gently held onto Spencer's forearm, whispering, "Reid?" Spencer looked up to Emily, his cheeks stained with tears, eyes red and puffy, and nose red and runny. He couldn't give one single fuck about what he looked like.
The team had only ever seen this side of Spencer once – completely broken down, hopeless. He'd normally saved that for when he got home, but when it came to a situation like this, he was helpless. The only time the team had seen him in this state was when Maeve died right in front of him. He couldn't let that happen ever again.
"Reid, tell us how it happened. In detail." Hotch's voice carefully spoke up. Spencer started going into hysterics, unable to get a single intelligible sentence out.
"She was–I swear, she was right–I don't know what–What did–How–"
"Spencer, pick one of us to go over it with you, the rest of us will wait, okay?" JJ spoke as she bent down to rub up and down Spencer's back, Emily still holding his arm to keep him grounded.
Spencer had heard those words before. He'd been in this situation before. It was all too overwhelming, but he needed his brain to work... for you.
"Emily." Spencer whispered, and she nodded. The rest of the team examining where the car used to be.
Emily lead Spencer to where you and him were sitting what felt like ages ago. "Start from the beginning what did you do today?"
Spencer sniffled and began describing the date you'd had. He'd spared the fact that it was actually a date, but he knew Emily wasn't ignorant.
"...Sh-She told me she had one more thing to show me, a-and she went in the direction of her car, which was only about a minute or two away from where we were sitting. When it had been ten minutes and she hadn't come back, I felt that same feeling I did when I got... that call."
"Call?" Emily questioned before realizing. "Oh."
The Zugzwang call.
Emily continued on with her inquiries. "Did it ever feel, at all, like someone was following you?"
"Honestly..." Spencer took a deep inhale, holding it for a moment before exhaling loudly, preparing for the weight of what he was about to tell Emily.
"Honestly, I was too distracted..." Spencer couldn't finish his sentence, but Emily did for him. "By her?"
"Yeah." Spencer replied meekly, his voice breaking.

You didn't know how much time had passed, but it felt like you've been stuck in this endless loop of falling in and out of consciousness. You couldn't put a time on how long you've been here even if there was a gun to your head.
