She'd never meant for this to happen. She never wanted to become one of those cliché stories about a girl who hid her feelings until it's too late. But she wasn't going to get jealous, if she simply removed herself from the situation then the problem disappeared. Luke had taken an interest in Julie and barely spoke to Y/N unless he needed help with a song.

Y/N avoided band practice like the plague, choosing instead to sit in abandoned alleyways plucking at the strings of her acoustic guitar or tapping out beats on her legs. She poured her thoughts onto the page and couldn't help but wonder what song the others were practising. Even when they weren't practising, she would make excuses and go on walks, sometimes she even made her way to the Hollywood sign. Y/N never did anything exciting in her adventures, she was always just writing down what she was thinking. It was always him. Every word, every lyric, they were always about him.

It frustrated her. She wanted to get over him so she could spend time with her friends again but the harder she tried, the more difficult it became. She tried her best to seem normal, but Alex and Reggie took notice fairly early on and soon enough even Julie frowned every time she noticed Y/N wasn't at rehearsal. They'd ask where she was going and she'd give blunt or non-descriptive replies, not wanting them to know. Alex knew why you'd been avoiding them but he never pushed for an answer or an explanation as to why not only did you avoid Luke, you avoided all of them.

Y/N had managed to make it through a practice, she focused on the music, letting that take over instead of the incessant nagging thoughts of him. However after, her social battery felt drained so she made her way out again.

"Where you going Y/N?" Alex asked.
"Just need to clear my head."
"Y/N are you-"
"I'm fine Alex. Really." She cut him off.
"Okay..."
"Y/N where have you been these past few days?" Reggie joined the conversation.
"I've... been exploring. You can do a lot of fun things when you're a ghost." She conjured up an excuse.
"So why not take me with you? I love fun things!" Reggie smiled.
"I just-"
"She wants to be alone." Luke scoffed.
"Yes. I do." Y/N whispered.
"Because for some reason, she never wants to hang out with us anymore." Luke continued bitterly.
"You don't under-"
"Because she'd rather go have ghost fun alone than hang out with us." Luke went on.
"Luke." Alex cut in.
"No she's been MIA since we got back here. We needed her and she wasn't here."
"Luke." Alex and Reggie tried to stop him.
"Guys, it's fine. He's just proving why I don't need to be here."
"But I-"
"No. Luke. It's fine. This is why I wasn't hanging around. So thank you for proving me right." Y/N bit back as she blinked out of the room.

The boys stood silent, staring at where Y/N once was.

"Way to go Luke."
"What I was just saying what we've all been thinking."
"What's going on?" Julie asked as she came into the garage.
"Y/N just poofed out because of Luke." Alex explained.
"It wasn't because of-"
"Yes it was." Reggie cut him off.
"What do you guys know that I don't"

The boys looked at each other, then both scratched the back of their heads as they looked down at the floor.

"Seriously guys what did I do."
"I think it's best she tells you herself." Alex admitted.
"What?"
"Just go and find her."
"But I don't know where she-"
"You know where to find her." Alex cut Luke off.
"O-ok."

With that Luke vanished in search of Y/N.

She sat on a makeshift bench in the alleyway, playing through her newest song. Her hands were shaking as she strummed her guitar. Luke appeared just down the alleyway but stayed silent as he  listened to her lament.

I've turned off all the lights,
I'm stuck in that night,
And I'll stay here forever,
It might make my life worse,
But i'll do it,
Even if it hurts...

She trailed off as she plucked the last chord, her head hung low as a few tears slipped down her cheek.

"Wow." Luke sighed.

Y/N eyes darted towards the voice and she panicked. She stood up quickly, unable to look away from him.

"H-how much-"
"I heard enough. Do you wanna talk about it?" Luke asked.
Y/N sighed and took a deep breath, "I miss you guys."
"But... you're the one that always leaves."
"Yes because you and Julie-"
"Me and Julie?"
"When we came back and we started working with Julie... you started writing with her more and more and- I know it's stupid but I just felt-"
"Alone?" Luke interrupted.
"It's ridiculous I know" Y/N laughed lightly.

They sat in silence for a moment, shoulder to shoulder, neither knowing what to say next. They glanced at each other, awkwardly laughing as they both looked down to the floor.

"I missed you too." Luke broke the silence.
"Really?"
"Yeah. I mean... You said Julie and I have been writing together a lot. Well, it's mainly been Julie."
"What?" she said as she turned to look at him.
"I haven't been as inspired as I usually am."
"Why?"
"Isn't it obvious?" he laughed.
"No?" Y/N said confused.
"You weren't there." he replied bluntly.
"Oh... So you-"
"We wrote most of Sunset Curve's songs together. With you not being there to write with me and Julie... Nothing felt right."
"I didn't think I was that important." Y/N joked.

Luke's face dropped as he realised that she didn't understand what he meant. He hesitated, unsure if he'd be able to make her understand. Y/N's nervous laughter brought him out of his thoughts.

"It's sounds so cheesy and you're gonna hate it but... You're my muse Y/N"
"I'm surprised you know what that means" Y/N deflected what he said.
"Do you really have to do that now?" Luke asked.
"Do what?"
"Have something sarcastic to say when things get serious."
"Do I do it that often?" Y/N chuckled.
"Yes."
"Oh. Well continue."
"I need you there when I write music. Otherwise it isn't the same. Because I like you..." he trailed off, mumbling the last few words.
"You what?"
"I think you heard me." Luke told her.
"I did but I want to really hear you say it." Y/N smirked.
"I like you." he repeated.
"Well... I like you too."

They both laughed lightly and a comfortable silence fell upon them. Both glanced up at the other, smiled and Luke slowly moved his hand over two hers, intertwining them.

"This is so cliché." Y/N commented.
"Wanna make it even more cliché?" Luke smiled, pulling her closer.
"Sure maestro."

They both lean in and finally after a painful 27 years of unspoken feelings, they kissed.
