(Age 10):

“What do you think of James?” Jason asks me from the other end of my bed.

“He’s cool.”

“Cool?” He asks with distaste. “Do you like him?”

I frown, sitting up against the bed head. “No. I mean, well, yes I like him, but not in the way you’re thinking.”

“Oh.” He sits up.

“Why are you up that end? Come down here.” I insist.

He moves closer. “What about Thomas?”

“You mean Tommy-Jay?”

He nods, crawling under the covers next to me.

“Ugh, I hate him. He always pulls my hair!”

He turns on his side, facing me. “I think Junior likes you.”

Junior is one of the popular boys, everyone likes him.

“Me?” I roll my eyes. “I don’t think so. He’s too good.”

“What do you mean by ‘He’s too good’?”

I shrug, lying down next to him. “Well, you know. He’s too good for me.”

Jason shakes his head. “No one’s too good for you.”

I blush a little, pulling the blankets up closer to my chin. “You have to say that, you’re my best friend.”

He frowns and it becomes quiet for a little while, until he asks me, “Who do you like?”

“No one.”

He raises his eyebrows. “Yes you do, tell me. We’re supposed to be best friends.”

“No, really,” I tell him honestly. “I don’t like anybody.”

His face tells me he doesn’t believe me. “Everyone likes someone.”

“Well who do you have a crush on, then?” I fire back at him.

He grins. “Kelly.”

“As in Kelly Brooks?”

His grin becomes bigger as he nods. “That’s her.”

My face twists in disgust. “Ew.”

He smiles. “Don’t worry, Aly.” His hand snakes around my waist and he pulls me into him. “You’ll always be my number one girl.”

(Present):

“Alicia!”

Panic surges through me as my mom screams my name. I throw down my Xbox controller and jump off my bed, running as fast as my legs will take me down the stairs.

“Mom!” I yell. “Mom, what’s wrong?”

I round the corner into the kitchen to see my mom standing by the phone, except she’s not moving. In her outstretched hand is the house phone, the yellow ‘in call’ light lit up.

I cautiously make my way over to her. “Mom?”

Her eyes move to me as very slowly, a smile starts to form on her face.

“Baby,” Tears come to her eyes. By this time I’m beyond confused. “Baby,” She repeats. “The phone’s for you.”

I take the phone from her and bring it to my ear curiously. “Hello?”

“Alicia James?” An old, husky male’s voice sounds from the phone.

“Yes…”

“This is Denis Moore here, and I’m calling you from Universal Music.”
