Chapter 37

❖Anna❖

The doctor's office is set in a small house on the outskirts of the city.
Gabriel had told me that doctor Harris has been working for il Capello for years.
Before he started working for the gang, he worked in the local hospital, but he couldn't combine the two anymore, so Gabriel's dad decided to pay doctor Harris twice as much as the hospital did. So, the switch was easily made. Working for il Capello meant more money, and protection from the mafia for him and his family.

Right now, we're sitting in a small backroom. The doctor already completed this checks and tests to see what my condition is after Samuel's torture.
Or well, I'm sitting. Gabriel keeps waking around the room, glaring at the clock on the wall every few steps, as if it would suddenly tick faster.
"Gabriel!" I snap, making him jump, "Could you please sit down? You're making me nervous."
"I'm sorry angel." He sits down next to me and lays a hand on my knee. "I just want to know that you are okay Anna. And I hate that it is taking so long."
"I know. But you, walking around, won't make it go faster."
He hums, softly squeezing my knee lost in thoughts again.
"It'll okay Gabe. Whatever happens, we will figure it out."
"This is wrong." Gabriel says with a small smile as he looks at me. "I should be the one comforting you. Not the other way around."

The door slowly opens and a cute little girl with a head full of curls walks into the room. She looks around the room until her big brown eyes land on Gabriel and me. "Who are you?" she asks. "Why are you here? Are you hurt? Do you know where my father is? Oh! Are you two married?" the questions flow out of her mouth and I notice that Gabriel is getting slightly uncomfortable, which makes me smile. The big bad mafia boss gets uncomfortable from kids.

"Hello sweetie." I jump in, interrupting her many questions. "I'm Anna. What is your name?"
"I'm Austin." She answers happily.
"It's nice to meet you Austin. You asked about your father. I don't know who he is, but I can help you find him if you tell me who he is. Can you tell me?"
"Yes I can!" she grabs my hand and tries to pull me with her but before she can pull me out of the room, doctor Harris walks back into the room, with his noose in some papers.

"I got all the results back." He looks up at us and suddenly sees the little girl in front of us. "Austin! What are you doing here?" he asks, a look of surprise on his face.
"Daddy!" Austin yells as she jumps into her fathers' arms. "I made you a painting with real paint daddy! But it's still wet so mommy told me I couldn't bring it to you yet. So, I decided to bring you too the painting instead."
"That is very sweet of you darling. But I have to talk to these people first."
Austin's happy face slowly turns into a pout as her father speaks to her. "But I will come to you as soon as I can okay?"
"Okay!" she says, a smile appears back on her face as she jumps back down. "Bye daddy! Bye Anna! Bye sir with a name I don't know!" She waves goodbye and skips out of the room.

"I'm sorry about that." Doctor Harris says as he watches his daughter leave. "She normally doesn't come in here."
"Don't worry about it, doctor. She seems like a sweet child." I answer.
"That she is, but she can be a little demon if she doesn't get what she wants. Lucky for her, I love her." The doctor laughs and turns his attention back to the papers in his hands. "So, I have the results of the tests we did."

❖Gabriel❖

I noticed Anna's breath halter as the doctor starts to talk about the results. Taking her hand in mine, I try to give her some form of support. I know she is scared for what might come out. But we'll get through. Just like she said.

"Let's start with the thing you where most scared about, so that gets out of your mind." The doctor starts. "You're not pregnant, nor have you gotten any sexual deceases."
I release some air that I didn't even know I was holding and I notice Anna's shoulders relaxing a little as well.
"You do however have a broken rib and two others bruised; we will have to tape them. Your right shoulder blade is bruised. And a broken finger tip."
I glance over at Anna as the doctor continues to explain everything. How could she have told me that nothing was hurting her yesterday. She must have been in pain. And I didn't even notice it... I should have noticed it.

"That's everything. Do you have any questions?" The doctor's voice gets me back out of my thoughts.
"What about my face? Will the cut become a scar?"
"No, I don't think it will. The cut isn't deep, so it should heal completely. I will give you some cream that will help the healing process."
Anna releases a big sigh and nods. "That's good."
I softly pinch in her hand. "When will you tape her?" I ask the doctor.
"Right now. If you don't mind Gabriel, could you leave the room so she can undress? Then I'll get everything we need and it'll be done in no time."
I look at Anna, silently asking if she is okay with me leaving. She nods and I softly kiss her forehead. "I will be right outside the door if you need me."
"Okay." She answers in a whisper.
I send her a warm smile before leaving the room with the doctor.

"Is she really going to be okay doc?" I ask him ones the door is closed.
"Physically she will be back to normal soon. Mentally however, is a different story. She didn't tell me much about what happened, only answered with yes or no."
"She barely told me about it at all. I do know she was abused and raped almost every day that she was there. But she didn't say anything about that."
"It's a lot for a person to take in Gabriel. Right now, her mind is in 'survival mode'. But as soon as that changes, she will be very emotional, she might even get night terrors. That is the moment she will need you the most."
I nod, knowing he is right. I saw what happened to my father when his emotions got out. And I know what we can do with someone when they are in that state of mind. It's a well know torture technique.
Ones the raw emotions come out, anything can happen. And I will do everything within my power to help my angel get through that all.
"I will be right by her side." I vow.
Doctor Harris looks at me with a small smile playing on his lips. "I know you will Gabriel."

The doctor walks off to collect the tape for Anna as I wait outside the door. Not moving an inch more than what's needed. I know nothing will happen to her here. But it still feels wrong to leave her.

Doctor Harris returns and gets back into the room with Anna. To kill the time a little, I decide to text Nicolaas to see how everything is going back at the warehouse.

Gabriel 11:57: Got any updates for me?

Nicolaas 12:01: Nothing yet. River and Raphael are having some fun with our new prisoner. Eliot is getting Paul and his gang ready to get back into the woods to seek for clues about Samuel's whereabouts and the twins are angry that they have to stay in...

Gabriel 12:03: Don't worry about the twins. I'll talk with them when I get back. How is El holding himself up?

Nicolaas 12:04: He has found his place Gabe. The boy has some good strategies up his sleeve. You taught him well.

I'm about to send a text back, when the door opens and Anna appears in the door opening.
"Everything okay?" I ask her.
She nods and steps out. "I'm all taped up."
I slip my phone back into my jeans pocket, hold out my arm and wait for Anna to take it, before I look at doctor Harris.
"It's my job. Just remember what I told you."
I send him a quick nod and turn my attention back to Anna.
"Ready?"
"Ready."
"Then let's go home."
