Flesh is the easiest mask to wear

Flesh is the easiest mask to wear.

So when the flesh rots away

and there's nothing left

but a stinking carcass

and a grinning skull

and all the filth of the earth crawling in and out

through every nook and cranny,

will we see your true colors?

Will it be displayed across your forehead,

carved into your very bones?

Will it be noticed almost instantly just in the way your skull smiles?

Will someone dig it up,

years later,

not having any idea who you were or what you've done,

and look at your skull,

just take one look at the way it lies in the dirt and exclaim,

"My God, they must have been a liar"?

Will it be one of those things that has no real proof or evidence,

but you know just by taking one look at it,

deep in your gut,

that it's true?

When your mask rots away,

what else remains?

A skull?

An empty house?

Two eyeless sockets and a grin?

Does anything stay?
