Chapter 25

Today Daniela and I are spending some quality mother/daughter time together. We decided to just have a picnic at the park and just relax!

“Baby are you ready?” I call out as I stuff the picnic basket with goodies

“Yup, I’m ready” she says to me as she walks into the kitchen

“Okay then, grab this and put it in the car I’ll meet you there” I hand her the picnic basket

“Oomph! This sure seems like a lot of food mum” she struggles to carry the basket and I roll my eyes at her

“Go on, stop complaining” I say to her as I grab the blanket

My phone rings, it’s Derrick, I quickly answer his call as Daniela heads to the car

“Hey, didn’t I tell you we’re having a mother/daughter day?”

“So it excludes calls as well?” he asks from the other end

“Yes Derrick!”

“Okay okay…enjoy, take care” he laughs and hangs up

I then grab my bag and the blanket and walk towards the front door; I close it behind me and hop into the car. I reverse out the yard whilst Daniela is glued to her phone, busy texting god knows who

“Darling…”

“Yes mum?” she doesn’t even bother to look up at me

“Put your phone away and keep it there for the rest of the day” I tell her sternly

“Okay…” she quickly shoves it into her pocket

We pull into the park and I open the boot of the car, I get out the basket whilst Daniela grabs the blanket and looks for a spot for us to relax at. I lock the doors to the car and go in search for her, I finally spot her at a far end of the park, the blanket is laid down on the grassy patch and there’s a guy chatting to her. She seems to be enjoying chatting to this guy; he looks about seventeen or eighteen. As I watch her chat with this guy, I realize how much time has passed and I think about everything that I’ve been through, I have a thirteen-year-old and next thing I know with a blink of an eye she’ll be off to college, marrying the man of her choice and she’ll be all grown up and not so little anymore!

I walk towards the spot she’s chosen “Hey guys” I greet them

“Hey mum” she looks back at me and smiles

“Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend?”

“Mum meet Jerome, Jerome meet my mum” she introduces us

“Nice to meet you mam” he smiles and stretches his hand out for me to shake

“The pleasure is all mines” my hands meet his

“I guess I should be leaving now, it was nice speaking to you Daniela, hope to see you guys again sometime”

“Bye” she waves at him as he leaves

“So…nice guy hey” I say to her as I place the basket down

“Yeh he’s okay” she smiles at me

“Are you hungry?”

“Starving!”

“Okay then let’s eat, shall we?” I open the picnic basket and take out the sandwiches and cool drink. I hand a sandwich and serviette to Daniela

“So mum…”

“Yeh”

“I was thinking…”
