Chapter 22

It’s funny how time passes by so rapidly! In just a month’s time I’ll be holding my little boy in my arms, it’s so exciting yet so scary at the same time – Will I be a good mum? And yeh Clarence’s instincts were right after all…we’re having a son. I didn’t really care what we were going to have though, just as long as I get to hold my healthy baby.

Derrick has been visiting quite often, flying over whenever he got the chance to, I’m not really sure if it is because he thinks there’s a possibility that he could be the father or if he just wants to be there for me like before…

Clarence and I have invited our parents over as well as Derrick for a long deserved family lunch. I’m not sure if I’m going to have time for all of this when the baby arrives, everyone keeps telling me that I should enjoy my free time now because once my little bundle arrives I’m going to pray for some free time!

“Mum could you please check the roast chicken for me, I’m going to check who it is” I say to her as I hear the doorbell ring

“You should have some rest before you land yourself in hospital for early labor”

“I won’t mum, don’t worry…” I say to her as I walk out the kitchen and towards the front door

“Oh my god! You are looking too cute with that big baby bump!” Clarence’s mum says to me as she rubs my stomach and kisses me

“Come on in, the guys are in the lounge watching football and mum and I are preparing lunch”

“You should not even be the kitchen-“

“I know I’ve heard it all from mum before” I quickly interject

“Then you should be taking our advice, we are women who’ve been through it before” she tells me sternly as we enter the kitchen

“Hey Florence, it’s so good to see you” mum says to her as she hugs and kisses her

“Same here darling, and you haven’t aged a bit!”

“Oh thank you, always full of compliments”

“So is there anything I could help with?”

“Well, the food is prepared, I just need to get it to the dining room table so you could help with that” I begin to pick up the plates to place on the table when Clarence’s mum gives me a disapproving look and takes it from my hand

“You can have a seat at the table my dear” I pout and listen to her obediently and head towards the table

“Guys the food is ready” I call out to them as I struggle to sit beside the table, this huge stomach has made it so difficult for me to do many things

“Are you okay Dianne?” Derrick asks with concern as he notices me struggling to sit

“Yeh I’m fine, just can’t wait to give birth and be able to sit beside the table easily!” I roll my eyes at him irritated with my silly dilemma

As everyone takes a seat, Clarence chats to daddy and his father about sports, mum and Clarence’s mum chats about their recipes, Derrick sits opposite me and stares at me. I suddenly feel a hard kick inside me and I jerk a little

“Is he kicking?” Derrick enquires on seeing my facial expression. Suddenly everyone stops chatting and looks at me

“Yeh and he kicks pretty hard too”

“Can I feel?” he asks me

“Sure” I smile at him, he comes around and places his big hand on my stomach, and he begins to smile like a little child in a candy store when he feels my little boy kick

“Our future football player” he says as he returns back to his seat

I suddenly feel the need to use the toilet, I wake up from my seat and head towards the toilet, when I do arrive at the toilet nothing seems to be coming out, I sit for a while waiting but still nothing so I return to the table

“You alright darling?” mum asks me as she passes on the salad

“Yeh, false alarm”

I begin to feel a little pain in my lower back, I try moving around in my seat to get comfortable but the pain still remains. I continue to eat my food quietly as everyone continues to chat, I then feel a little wave like sensation in my lower abdomen, I think it’s due to the baby moving…

I again feel the need to urinate, I once again head towards the toilet and when I get there the same thing happens…nothing comes out! This is beginning to get annoying and it feels so uncomfortable!

“What’s happening babes? Clarence questions me as I return back to the table

“Nothings, it’s just I keep having this feeling as if I need to urinate but nothing comes out” I say to him irritated

“Oh that happened to me a lot when I was pregnant with Clarence” his mum says

Everyone continues to eat and I do so too but yet again I feel the need to urinate but this time it feels as if I’ve been keeping it in for too long that it’s beginning to pain a little. I head towards the toilet again, I take two steps away from the table and next thing I know there’s a lot of water or urine, I’m not too sure what it is but it just came gushing out. Everyone immediately hurries towards me

“Clarence! Either I urinated all over the floor or my water just broke!” Clarence grabs his keys in a panic “Get me some dry clothes please”

“Okay, Derrick, could you drive her to the hospital, I’ll get some dry clothes for her and meet you guys at the hospital” he says to Derrick

“We’ll follow you guys there” daddy says

As we hop into the car I begin to feel this pain that feels like period cramps, it doesn’t last long but it’s happening regularly. I bite my lips as I try to ignore the cramps

“You’ll be fine, just hang in there” Derrick assures me as he holds my hand

Clarence sits beside me as I hold my gorgeous baby girl. Apparently scans are not a hundred percent correct, it can be wrong at times so I guess Clarence’s instincts were not so right in the end

“She’s beautiful just like her mummy” he says to me as he kisses my forehead

Derrick then walks in with mum, daddy and Clarence’s family

“So we finally get to meet our grandchild” Clarence’s mum says

“You look just like your mummy when she was born” daddy says to my little angel

“So what are you naming my favorite niece?” Derrick asks as he admires her

“Danielle…” I say as I look at my baby girl yawning

“I’m going to get you something to eat, since this little one wanted to join us so badly that she didn’t give you a chance to eat peacefully” Clarence says as he exits the room

“Yeh and you should get some rest” Our parents leave the room soon after whilst Derrick remains

“She’s beautiful, can I hold her?” he asks

“Sure” I hand Danielle over to him “Do you want to get the paternity test done?”

“Only if you want to?”

“I do, or else my mind won’t be at ease”

“Okay…”

“You never did tell me what happened with you and Leticia?”

“Things just weren’t working out”

“Is it because of you and I?”

“When I told her that you were pregnant, she immediately asked the same question I asked you when I found out”

“You didn’t tell her did you?” I ask him worriedly

“I didn’t want to lie to her…”
