Chapter 24
“Hey princess!” Derrick steps into Daniela’s bedroom as I’m reading her a bedtime story. She jumps out of bed beaming with excitement
“Uncle D!” she clings onto him as he carries her
“Did you miss me?”
“More than Barbie misses Ken” her smile grows wider
“Well can I tell you a little secret?”
“Yes yes!”
“I missed you more than I missed your mummy” he whispers loud enough so I can hear. She hugs him even tighter than before
“When did you get here? I had no idea you were going to be in town tonight” I ask him as I still lay on Daniela’s bed with the story book in hand
He looks at his watch and back at me “About an hour ago”
“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
“I wanted to surprise my little princess”
“Well you did a good job at that and also you surprised the queen as well” I joke
“So what did you get me?” Daniela asks excitedly
“I got you a…” he keeps her in suspense for a while
“Tell me!” she begs as she can’t wait any longer
“A pacifier” he grins
“I’m not a baby I’m eight-years-old!”
“Oh really now?”
“Yes really” she mimics his tone
“Well your surprise is waiting for you downstairs” as soon as he mentions it she hops out of his arms and races downstairs
“Slow down before you fall”
“Yes mum” she screams as she’s half way downstairs
“You shouldn’t be spoiling her like this” I say to Derrick
“She’s my only child and she deserves to be spoilt” he says to me as he steps closer to me
“What are you-“ he prevents me from continuing as he presses his lips against mine, I begin to let him in and he deepens the kiss as he places his hands around my waist and I place mine around his neck kissing him more passionately
We pull apart as we here a big noise coming from downstairs, sounds like something breaking. We hurry downstairs to check up on Daniela, as we reach there we see Daniela on a quad bike with her hands placed against her cheeks and she has a very guilty look
“Sorry mum” she quickly apologizes
“It’s not your fault hunny, it’s your Uncle D’s fault” I look at him sternly
“How is it my fault?”
“You bought her a quad bike! A quad bike Derrick? Of all the things you could have bought, you bought a quad bike!” I say to him as I pick up the pieces of the broken vase
“Quad bikes are cool” Daniela says from the side of me
“Yeh quad bikes are cool” Derrick mimics
“What do I do with you two?” I surrender
“What would you do without us?” Derrick smiles at me as he helps me clean up the mess
Derrick has been visiting almost every week, Daniela loves him to bits, they have a very close relationship now and he enjoys spending all his time (and money!) on her. She sometimes asks about Clarence but he never phones or visits, I’ve heard that he’s moved on but I’m happy for him.
