Chapter 14

It’s Sunday evening and I’m helping mum prepare for our Sunday night dinner. Tonight’s special is barbecued steak with Portobello mushrooms…mmmmm…mums cooking is the best!

I begin to gather all the ingredients and culinary that will be needed as mum slices the onions, I hate slicing onions and having my eyes burn like crazy so mum opted to do go through the torture instead.

“So Dianne, how is school?” she asks me out of the blue whilst wiping the tears from her eyes

“You know…the usual…nothing too exciting” I answer whilst I remove the stems from the Portobello mushrooms

“Any new man in your life?” she looks at me naughtily

I slowly drift into my own world as I begin to think of Derrick and how sweet he has been to me, being there for me through my pregnancy till my miscarriage, helping me get over Clarence and so forth, I smile at the thought but I’m suddenly snapped back to reality

“Diane? Hello?” mum calls out to me trying to get my attention

“Sorry what did you say?” I ask suddenly back to reality

“So I guess you do have someone new in your life…” she smiles at me

“Huh? What? No…I…I don’t” I stutter as I try to think of something to say

“Well…if you don’t then what has you looking all dazed and smiling to yourself?

“Uhmm…just thinking of a silly thing that happened at school on Friday” I quickly respond whilst grabbing a knife from the draw and finely chopping the parsley

“Care to share?” mum asks as she turns on the indoor grill and turns it up to medium heat, placing a frying pan over

“No its nothing really, you wouldn’t find it interesting. So daddy mentioned you guys are going on a holiday soon?” I swiftly change the subject

“Yeh we are planning on it but haven’t decided where to go” she adds a little oil and garlic to the pan and sauté’s it for two minutes as I watch

“Where would you like to go?” I take a seat at the table

“Maybe Hawaii or Bali…thinking of it gets me so excited” she transfers the oil and garlic to a bowl whilst I coat the onion slices and mushroom caps thoroughly with cooking spray

“That sounds like interesting places to go with someone you love”

“You and Derrick should come along” she says casually as she grills the onions and mushrooms

“Someone you love…not family” I say to her as I cut the steak crossways and season it with salt and pepper

“Don’t you love Derrick?” she takes the steak away from me and coats it lightly with cooking spray whilst I sit in shock and my body stiffens at the sound of her question

“What?”

“Don’t you love your brother, father and i?” she takes the steak pieces and places them on the grill

I sigh in relief “Oh yeh I do but I would love to go to places like that with a boyfriend or husband not family…that will just remove the romantic feel of the place”

Once there are brown grilled marks on the steak, she removes them and places each piece on a separate plate and I place sliced tomato on each piece. Mum then tops it with mushroom sauce

“I wish I wasn’t married to your dad but it just happened and we love each other and couldn’t control what has happened”

“Why do you wish you guys weren’t married?” I ask her confused at her sudden statement as I finish adding the chopped parsley over the sauce

“Then it would have given you and Derrick the chance to be together”

“What? No-“before I could continue she stops me

“You don’t need to deny it, i know everything, I see the way he looks at you and the way he’s changed after spending all this time with you. I know that you like him to and I don’t know if you have already realized it, but you guys can’t be together because your dad will never allow it”

This brings tears to my eyes especially her last words that Derrick and I could never be together “I know…but please can you promise me you’ll never tell daddy?”

“You have nothing to worry about my angel but just be careful” she kisses me on my forehead as she picks up two plates and heads to the dining room

After a few minutes of sitting and staring into space I decide to follow with the other two plates. I enter the dining room, daddy and Derrick are already seated, I place the plates on the table as mum goes back into the kitchen to fetch the salad

As soon as mum takes her seat at the table daddy leads us into prayer

“For food and health and happy days

Receive our gratitude and praise

In serving others Lord may we

Repay our depth of love to thee

Amen”

“mmmm… mum this meal is delicious” Derrick says with his mouth full

“Swallow before you speak and thank Diane” she looks at me and smiles

“Why?” he asks after quickly swallowing his food

“Because she helped prepare this meal” she looks at him sternly

“Thank you Diane” he winks at me and mum catches that

“You welcome” I smile at him as I rub my foot against his leg

“If you continue to assist your mum in the kitchen, soon you’ll be as good as her” daddy says to me whilst mum blushes

I continue to tease Derrick and allow my leg to slide further up his leg and he stares at me not knowing what to do

“So son, how is school?” daddy asks him catching Derrick off guard

“Yeh Derrick, how is school?” I mimic as I rub my foot on his crotch making him tense up

“Uhmm…uhmmm…its good” he tries to look at daddy but instead stuffs food in his mouth

I can now feel his hard on and I smile to myself as I think of how he’s going to stand up when he’s so hard and mum and daddy are here

After we all done with dinner, mum begins to clear the table whilst Derrick is still seated but just then the telephone rings and daddy stands up and goes over to answer it. Derrick quickly stands up and runs over to his room whilst I sit here laughing like a crazy person. Mum walks back in and gives me a weird look.

“Okay I’m off to my room” I say to mum as she finishes off clearing up

I walk up towards my room, as I enter the top and go to my room Derrick’s big firm hand pulls me towards him and he holds onto me tightly and kisses me. We both pull away when we here daddy’s voice nearing, he lets out a huge smirk as he goes to his bedroom
