I walked through the door with you the air was cold

I knew this was a mistake as soon as I walked through those doors. Everyone around me was happy faces, happy stories, happy pasts. Did they not understand that being surrounded by happiness made me feel worse? The dinner was just another useless outing until they brought her up.

"Remember Ian's birthday like a million years ago when Taylor shoved cake up his face," Mike blurted out. I felt my stomach turn.

"Mike, I thought we all agreed to not talk about that," Ian said through a mouthful of burger.

"That was hilarious," Matt said.

"I was blowing cake out my nose for the next few days!"

And I know it's long gone

I chewed on lip, unaware of the pain. The memories were all coming back. Like a kaleidoscope, the memories danced in front of my eyes, the colours and smiles, and tears swirled into one. And then they exploded; and for the millionth time, so did my heart.

"She was such an amazing person," Carly said in awe. "Didn't she go on Wipeout or something to raise money for the studio?"

"Yes, I remember that. It still blows me away that she managed to win," Matt said. "She definitely cheated. Probably put laxatives in the contestants drinks or something."

"No way. She wasn't a cheater," Mike defended.

"She certainly wasn't athletically inclined," Matt countered. He turned to my dad who was staring down at his food. "Remember when we took her snow boarding? Didn't you cut her off and she like ran into a tree or something?"

I half nodded, completely unaware of the situation around me.

I began slowly walking back to the studio, keeping Taylor within arms reach. She took one cautious step and toppled into the wall. I held out my hand. "Come on. I can help you," he softly said. She hesitated. "I promise."

A promise wasn't saying much, and I wouldn't blame her if she never trusted me again, but she took hold of my hand. I helped her up and wrapped my arm around her. We started walking again. I held most of her weight in my arms. But that was okay; as long as she was in my arms, she was protected. She was safe. After what John had done to her, I never wanted to leave her side again.

The heavy snow fall made it easy to get lost, but I knew the exact way back to the studio. I was chilled to the bone, and I think Taylor was to, but I don't think she was just shaking from the cold.

I opened the door and led her into the building. The warm air, was like a comforting hug, and I was so grateful for it. Taylor was still shivering. Perhaps it wasn't warm in here, but I felt warm because this place home. I wondered if this was the best place to take Taylor after the incident, but I could see she was gradually becoming more comfortable.

I led her to the couch and we sat down. She pulled her feet up and rested her head on my shoulder. Little did she know how it made my insides jump.

"Do you want to watch a movie?" I asked. I mentally slapped myself. What a stupid, stupid question. Were there even any movies here?

Taylor shrugged.
